Roman holiday

It was the first time to visit Rome. Actually I wanted to visit there for years, especially for the Vatican museum. I love the movie Gradiator and books written about Roman history, but I did not have a special interest in the city.

During my stay in Rome, I did not go to Trevi, Spanish stairs. I was not there to see people from all over the world. What I liked the most in the city is water. There are everywhere water in the city running. It was not built for tourists. It was built for the people living in the city many many years ago.

I went to the nearby snack bar in the evening almost every day. The shop keeper did not pay any attention at first, but after the second day, he smiled and asked me "Do you want a beer?" before I said anything. I just sat near the counter, read my book and watched people coming in and out. Tourists would take a table outside, but neighbors would come inside, sip coffee at the counter standing, talk with the shop keeper and then disappeared. On the wall of the bar, there were old pictures of the building where the bar is in. More than 40 years ago.

Police officers with their guns at their waist took rest and had a cup of coffee, business people in a fine suits. I saw them more than twice there. There are lots of fancy restaurants in Rome, offering special menu for tourists. But sandwitch bars or snack bars are for the people living there and each of them has her/his place.

Actually the snack bar was the only place I felt really comfortable to stay for hours to see familier faces. They will never ask me "Do you want dessert or coffee?"

Italian Belgian beer

I wanted to see how the market in Rome looks like and went to the Calpo di Fiori. There were lots of shops selling foods and something else, but it was much smaller I imagined. Actually Naschmarkt in Vienna is much bigger and many different types of shops are there. I wanted to take some pictures at the market but I didn't.

I decided to go home and tried to find something interesting on the way back. There were many narrow streets without people and it was really very beautiful.

After about 5 minutes walk, I passed by a building. I saw many bottles on the wall inside. I thought it might be a wine bar or something. But the shop staff was about to open the shop at noon. I stopped by and looked inside. It was so a beautiful wall with different color of bottles. I asked a woman there at the door if it was already opened, she said yes. I went inside. It was a beer bar. On the side wall there were beers available there, I was able to read  Weizen beer, Bergian beer, Stout beer and even Ale beer. I was not quite sure but I thought they procure these from other European countries for the beer lover in Rome.

As I read the menu, I slowly understood that they were made in Italy. Honestly, I did not hear much about Italian beer till now. Usually Belgian beer, German beer or Czech beer. I did drink really nice Polish beer or Russian beer when I was there, but I would imagine wine first when it comes to Italian drink. I ordered a burger for the lunch and some glasses of beer. It surprised me a lot. Usual Italian beer is thin, maybe due to its climate. But beers I tried there were full and had strong flavor like white wine.

After coming back home, I read in the web site (it seems that the English page is still under construction) in detail. Then I went there three times to try other beers during my stay. There are suprises during travel all the time, but this was also the one.

On the last visit, I talked to the shop staff at the casher that there is nothing like that in Vienna and I would like to have this there, too. I bought two bottles to take back. Next time, if I happen to visit Rome again, I am sure to come back here.

Viva gli Sposi

It was sunny and was just before noon. I was standing in a very hot and sultry church in a small Italian town, looking at my friend in front of me flapping her fan. Italian people are much more religious than Austrian people, we knew it but our only wish was ....that the priest's talk would be over very soon.

About three months ago, a friend of mine asked me of my postal address. He lived in Vienna for several years but now in Italy. There was actually nothing until July when I received a beautiful envelop delivered to my postbox. An invitation to his marriage party in Italy. I got to know him in Vienna, he is a very fun Italian guy, generous and any way all „Italian“. The more I talked with him, I got to know that he watched the same TV anime programs in his childhood in 10 year's delay from mine.

Twelve of our common friends including those who used to live in Vienna out of 11 different nationalities currently living in Vienna, Rome, Athens, Luxembourg and Brussels gathered together in a small Italian city Mestre in Veneto, about 30 minutes car travel from Venice. Some came earlier than others, I flew from Vienna with one of them after the work on Friday. It was just a weekend trip to Italy. Every transportation from/to airport or station and booking hotels was organized by the groom, he was so patient to organize everything in spite of our almost individual wishes; some wanted to fly earlier and go sightseeing in Venice, the other wanted to longer than others until Monday.

The next morning, around 10:30, two taxis came to pick us up in front of our hotel as our groom friend organized. Somebody then said that we have never seen each other so beautifully dressed. It was true. It took about just 20 or some minutes to get to the church where the ceremony would be held. There we met two more of our friends came from different direction from their vacance. Slowly but gradually more and more attendees arrived. Surely more than 100 and more. Our groom friend appeared soon with his local friend. He looked almost as same as he usually was in Vienna, but razored his beard quite sharply and neatly. He seemed to be quite relaxed. To attend a wedding ceremony in Italy was actually the first time. It should be different from Austrian ones, yes, Italian people are very different from Austrian.

Thanks I.

Thanks K.

Finally our beautifully dressed bride appeared in a white 50' Cadillac with a small fridge for drink attached at the middle of the back seat. People crowded around the car.

Thanks M.

The ceremony started. How hot was it inside? Sometimes we heard babies crying during the ceremony, maybe due to that heat. Some adults went out maybe because they could have felt bad. My ears slowly caught up Italian words by then. Life, marriage and the God. I think it quite difficult to tell such the story nowadays; less and less people would believe in God in Europe. Or maybe attendees were not able to concentrate on the priest's speech because of the heat. Any way it was a hard „work“ for all of us there.

Thanks M.

After sharing round bread on some people's tongue, the ceremony was over. Most of the people were already outside to take in fresh air, some were still there to talk to bride and groom. Outside, our groom's close friends were preparing something to welcome the fresh pair coming out of the church. Bags of penne, rice and some cartons of cat food. Condoms were blown to be like a balloon, were attached to a string.

When the pair came out of the door, it was closed and then people started to scatter penne and pasta to the top of the pair. Our Vienna group people also followed the Italian style saying „auguri“. The groom's close Italian friends even „applied“ handful of rice onto his head. His suite got white stain from rice when we had nothing more to scatter around.

Thanks M.

Of course very important for all attendees, here came photo shooting time. We just join the background of the picture with bride and groom as we were called; male friends of groom, friends from abroad and so on.

Thanks K.

It was time for the party. We drove with the groom's cousins or brothers to the party in three groups. I was with other 3 Vienna friends together on the way in a car which our groom's cousin M. drove. After about 10 minutes drive, M. noticed that there was something wrong with his car, stopped his car at the road side of a closed gas station, checking his car around front tires. One of them was flat. He told me that he cannot use the spare tire and there is no way. The station was closed until the following day as written „chiuso per feria“. There was nothing to be used to pump the air, One of us, B. suggested that M. should drive the car alone to the next gas station where he can do something and then return to fetch us later. I told M.about it in Italian. Actually there was no other way.

Although the station was closed, gasoline was served without service people. We four were standing there, dressed in quite conspicuous way at a closed gas station, waited our driver came back. A shower of rain once came and soon went away, we were standing under the roof. After a while, maybe in thirty or some minutes, two cars came to fetch us. Finally we were at the restaurant where the party took place. Other friends were already there and relaxed with some drink and snacks.

The restaurant has a garden and a pool with running water and alternating illumination, relatively new, I thought. Some tents were pitched to serve snacks or drinks in the garden, people were also organizing instruments and an amplifier for live music. Waiting for the fresh pair arrives we took snacks and sparkling wine and talked to each other. It was very hot then, after some 10 minutes it started to rain a bit strongly which seemed to be get rid of the heat of the air. I told others that there is a Japanese phrase, fox's marrige we call when it rains and sun shines at the same time. A female singer started to sing on keyboard and saxophone, it was wonderful.

Thanks I.

Thanks M.

Thanks D.

As the organizer called all the guests, we entered the restaurant on the first floor to have meal. In a big room we found about 10 or 12 round tables covered with white table cloth, 8 people at each. And of course the table for the pair was in the very front. I found my name at the table singed „Friends from Abroad 2“. On the table there was a big candle stand in the middle that held 5 sphere shaped candles in different levels.

Thanks K.
The meals was based on sea food, so told us our groom in advance, it was served in the Italian manner, starts with primo and second piatto then follows some main dishes and dessert. Waiters were always busy serving dishes for each guest. They were all very delicately seasoned and never spoiled the flavor or taste of ingredients. Here is the list of the course menu delivered to the table in turn.

Thanks A.

Our members from Vienna were worrying when to give the present which we prepared from Vienna, I just told them that we can just wait until the right time would come. Our groom is so busy to communicate with his family, relatives and friends,  there should be no way to ply ourselves among them.

„Viva gli sposi“ that was the word often shouted by local Italians which means „Live long the bride and the groom“. As we ate meals and drank wine, I remembered what we talked about the day before; about typical wedding party progress of each country we come from. One of these was chicken dance from Romania. It is hard to imagine at all but I just recalled a scene of Tom & Jerry show which I saw long time ago where (naked) grilled chicken danced and after that got ashamed to notice that „she“ is naked and try to cover something around her.But it looks like this actually according to my friend R..

One after another, we enjoyed newly served food, every dish was wonderful. After finishing eating, people were moving freely to other table, talked to each other. Our members from Vienna once went outside for breathing, the meal was too much for some of us and we had much enough wine already. And our groom friend was too busy to talk to guests that would come up to their table  in the very front. I still stayed in the room to be talked by the neighbor tables where only Italian speaking people were sitting. I had to correct how they pronounced my name. It was from one of the tables in the room where people shouted „viva sposi“ all the time. M., who tried to drive us to the restaurant was also there, I asked him what exactly happened with his car. His response was, he has to take his car to the workshop in two days.

thanks M.
The groom's parents came up to me. His father rather kept silence, his mother always talked to me. Maybe they always hear from him how his life in Vienna used to be or which kind of friends he has there. But maybe they wanted to get to know „them“ in person. She pointed to the table next to us and said that many of her daughters are still single. She guided me to the table and introduced each of them to me. I introduce myself to each of them, too. They were all very kind. I was very honored to talk to the groom's family members.

Then I was talked to by the man who came to pick us up at the gas station I was waiting for the car with three other friends, he called himself „Dante“ smiling, mentioning that the name should be very familiar to me. He talked about his last trip to Japan and we also talk about the earthquake in Japan. At least it seemed to me that he really likes Japan.

As the dessert finally came, some attcactions took place to entertain guests; some selected female guests peeled breast hair of groom with a tape, some brought presents to the pair. We also preapred some gift collection from Vienna, finally we got a chance to give it to the pair. We came up to the pair's table and let him open the box. He took every piece in the box one after another, giving his comment to the people around the table. I put a daruma figure in the box, a symbol of patience. He seemed to like an apron with Matroshka. Yes, he is a good cook.

The party continued downstairs later on. A DJ was playing some dance music, people were sitting outside by the pool drinking wine or cocktails, and some were dancing. It was already dark and we enjoyed the color of the pool water alternates by illumination. We ate and drank enough but still we fetch drinks and saw others were dancing, or talking. During the pause between music, the pair came and did some „attraction“ again. The groom fixated a pen in his front with his arms fastened in his back, the bride a sheet of paper attached like an apron around her waist, standing with her face toward him. He tried to write something on the paper which his wife has on her, just by moving his waist and bending his legs. It was hardly recognizable what he wrote but at least he was able to read it “Ti amo”.

thanks D.

Already some of us went back to the hotel, I sat at a table by the pool, talking with others and then D. jumped into the pool which was followed by K with her cloths on. First guest swam in the pool. Maybe they could have talked about it and had some bet. I did not join in the pool but dance, every time music changed and people went inside and danced, or made a row and put their hands on the shoulder of others, marching through the garden.

I talked with the groom's brother N., whom I once met when he was in Vienna some months ago. The guy G., who stood in front of the church holding string with condom balloon also came up to me. We talked for a while about foods or work, until then I felt quite easy to talk in Italian. G. told me that my Italian was not bad.

When groom's parents went back home they just come to me and said hello. It was almost 24:00, the party seemed to continue but I called it the end of the day and went back to the hotel with some others. It was one of the greatest parties I had had, or even one of the most fantastic days as a whole.

VIVA GLI SPOSI!!

P.S.1 I heard that later that our friend D. dived into the pool again after we had left the restaurant.
P.S.2 We all got a present from the pair but the next day.

Pizza on street

The last day in Naples. I first went to the pizzeria where I was yesterday, I did not have enough cash for 1 Euro or some, but they said OK to me. Yesterday I ordered scampi linguine due to waiter's recommendation, today I bought a piece of pizza in the front. Some pizza were in show case, new one would be brought from the oven one after another. I asked the one with spinach with sausage. It was very nice, a piece of the pizza cost 1.5 Euro. I paid 3 Euro for that mentioning I still owe a little from yesterday, the waiter recognized me.

Pizza @ Aiello

I was at Starita a bit early, they told me that they will be open from 12:00. A couchsurfer in Naples, Ely, a girl Greece sent me a SMS that she could go to Angelo to eat pizza together upon my post. I waited her at piazza Dante. It was sunny and warm, T-shirt was enough to stay outside. She appeared with her roommate Federica and greeted me. Without Internet connection, I had problems to contact local couch surfers, but she somehow succeeded to catch me in last minutes of my stay. I told her that Angelo should be closed due to the city guide, I wanted to be at hotel at latest at three to fetch my suitcase, we decided to walk through the city and buy some pizza.

Piazza Dante

I walked through the old city part yesterday, but I did not see all. Ely, a surgeon was skeptical that I would speak Italian. In narrow streets we saw lots of people waiting in front of pizzerias, cars were passing by within a few inches of crowd. We bought a piece of pizza at Matteo, Margherita for 1 Euro, and walked through narrow streets full of people toward piazza Garibaldi and each of us talked about ourselves. The cars were all the time warning people to step aside, so dense with people in the street. From the narrow streets I sometimes found beautiful churches for each I got some explanation from Naples natives. I talked about my stay in Biancavilla, Federica is from Sicily and talked about what I ate there. I saw live scampis or shells at fish markets near piazza Dante, I told her that I really love to eat fresh fish here and there in Sicily. There is almost no chance in Vienna. She told me that people do not often eat them raw. For my work camp, Ely told me that her father is working for olives in Greece, she quickly understood which kind of work I had in Sicily.

Di Matteo

In streets many shops were selling Christmas goods, it reminded me of Ameyoko street in Tokyo where people can buy foods to celebrate or prepare for the New Year. I saw lots of peperoni figures for souvenir, was it the speciality of Naples??

Ely took me to the cafe in front of Duomo and we had espresso together. I do not drink coffee often but Italian coffee is something different. I do myself exception for that. Quite a short time with them, but I really appreciate their hospitality. I really enjoyed talking with them.

Marinara

I looked for the address of Starita in the city guide book I received at hotel reception and knew that the pizzeria is closed on Monday. So I tried the other one for today. Michele. It is not very far from where I stayed, at least on the map. The man at reception told me that the pizzeria is touristic, but I did not know why. I just walked toward some big squares or churches, taking pictures and went toward the pizzeria. The pizzeria was very small, but it was quite easy to recognize from a distance, because lots of people were waiting outside.

It seemed to be a pizzeria where Julia Roberts ate pizza in her latest movie. I did not know it at all. Many other people outside were with their guide books, talking each other. They entered inside and got a number card for their table. I thought for a moment and went inside, told a man that I am alone. He took me inside at the same time and guided me to a table in the back. Very lucky I was. On the table there were still plates and beer bottles, a man was sitting there already. He let me in and I talked to him that if he came here alone. He lives in the suburb of Naples and comes here often. Then soon after that a couple came to sit at our table. I asked them how long they had waited to come in, the woman told me that they waited for 40 minutes. Such a big difference between one and two people! The man next to me told us that it is absolutely true, and that he always comes here alone.

Da Michele
Julia Roberts with our pizza

There were only two pizza variations in the menu; Margherita and Marinara. It is like an old soba-noodle restaurant in Japan run by a very stubborn owner who would refuse to have more menus to attract customers nor to be interviewed by media. I ordered Marianna and beer. They cost only 6 Euro together!! The others at the table Margherita doppia, doubled mozzarella.

Marinara

My pizza came first. I ordered media, middle size but much bigger than my expectation. While I was trying to take a picture, the girl in front of me offered me to take a picture of mine with pizza. The man next to me asked me a several questions that I might be a Chinese, what I am doing here and so on. I told them about my work camp activitly in Biancavilla and he said “unbelievable”. He asked me if I tried Sicilian sweets or pistachio which are the speciality of Sicily. Yes, I tried the pistachio torte at the harbor in Catania which was really very good. He said, “ah, I bothered you from eating, please start eating.” Then Margherita for others arrived.

Pizza was thin as I had yesterday. This should be the traditional Napolitan style I assume. Tomato sauce lied there like tomato soup which I could have dipped with spoon. Tomato, garlic and origano smelled fully in my mouth and nose. It was really very good. The man from the couple talked about sushi they took the day before and costed 80 Euro for two people including 2 bottles of white wine. He then asked me if it might be possible. Naples is abundant in sea food but it may possible. I talked them that Japanese adults would generally prefer sashimi, sushi without rice, or we would be soon full.

The walls of the pizzeria was rather vacant and almost without decoration but some pictures. While eating we saw old pictures hung on the wall, the man next to me in business suite and tie explained. He asked me where I would go next to eat pizza. I mentioned the one he did not know. Pizza in Naples was for a long time my dream. I have to enjoy as much as possible. Tomorrow Starita and Angelo which a local couchsurfer recommended to me before my flight.

Margherita

I arrived in Naples at 11:00 by ship from Catania. Without knowing which direction to go to get to my hotel, I just started to study the area around the harbor. I saw an old stone architecture above the hill, I just follow the road toward it out of instinct. On the way there I found a shopping street and a wonderful arcade. I wanted to buy a pair of new shoes before I go to my hotel: my shoes finished the life after the work camp in Biancavilla. I found a small shoes shop at the corner, I looked into the show window and found shoes of my taste. It was almost 13:00 and the shop was about to be closed. I asked the man in the shop if I can try the one in gray color in the show window. He asked me of my size, I told him 26.5cm. Of course he asked me of Italian size, he went to the back of the shop muttering it might be 41 or some. It was a little big for my feet, but they did not have a smaller size in the color. He asked me if I would like to have the one in different color, I said no. He went back and tried to find another shoes. His wife asked me if I work in Italy, I said that I work in Austria. I told her about my work camp in Biancavilla for two weeks to collect olives and stopped by in Naples on my way back to Vienna.

I sat in the sofa and waited for shoes. I started to grip my rubber ball for exercising, his daughter came up to me and showed me a very curious face. I told her that I broke my finger and I had to rehabilitate my hand, her mother also came up and explained to the daughter. Then I thought of doing something for her. She soon noticed that I started to make something with a piece of paper, observed what I was doing.

“Sai cos'è?” she said “Lana” and took it to her mother. When her father came back with a pair of shoes, I tried them on and they fit my feet. I said promptly that I would have them. I told the man that I would ware the shoes now and asked to abandon my old shoes. Signing my credit card, I told her that I came here to enjoy pizza and needed some information. Her husband came back and told me that there is the one just in the neighborhood. He told met that he likes Japanese food very much because it is light, he stressed that he does not like Chinese dishes. I said that that Italian food is similar to Japanese and many Japanese really like it.

They closed the shop and took me to the pizza restaurant they mentioned. Just 30 meters away from the shoes shop, there was a small pizzeria, Da Attilio. Inside wall of the pizzeria was fully filled with signboard written by customers. The father asked one of female staffs for a table for me, then they waited for a while until a table for three would be free. They sat at the table near mine. I examined the menu and selected Margherita, very simple pizza with tomato sauce and cheese with basil. I heard that the father ordered the same one.

I happened to find a text with a cartoon which a Japanese girl wrote for the shop. She ate also Margherita here and was very happy with it. The daughter sometimes looked back toward me, I started to fold lily. The female staff who let me take the table went by and said, “ah, origami!” well it is really well known. I called the daughter and gave her lily, looked like she really liked it.

The pizza came. It is very thin one, traditional Neapolitan style. It was very nice. Tomato taste was very intensive and cheese smelled very strongly. Smell of basil stayed after I ate a leave on the pizza, I really enjoyed that. It is the same as Carmela told me. I remembered pasta Carmela cooked. For simple cooking, ingredient is the key. Tomato tastes like tomato, cheese like cheese. This is the pizza! I told the father that I really liked the pizza. He said they would come to the pizza restaurant quite often. I can surely eat the pizza every day! I thanked them and they thanked me for some small presents for their daughter and said “arrivederci” to each other.

Margherita

At the hotel, I asked the man at the reception which pizza restaurant should not be forgotten if he should pick up three in the city. He told me four of his favorites, I asked him further which one he would prefer to go with his private friends. He pointed the one, Starita. He mentioned that the one is less touristic and is rather difficult to find. Yes, tomorrow I will try the one there. Well, maybe I can find somebody there who would recommend me the next pizzeria. What would I eat tomorrow...?

Green juice 青汁

The last day in Biancavilla. I brought my green juice powder to breakfast table, Evelien seemed to get cold yesterday, I wanted her to try it. Carmela wanted to try it, too, and then also others. I told Carmila that she can just squeeze and make juice from vegetable and it is very nice for chronicle disease. I somehow expected a typical reaction of Japanese people who would try green juice, everybody drunk normally. It was a surprise to me, however nobody mentioned that it was delicious. It seems that there is a market chance for green juice in Europe. Many European think that Japanese dishes are very healthy and want to adjust their diet. This trend will surely continue for a while. I always said yes to eat more, Sergio first time cheated me when somebody asked me if I would like to have yogurt, and he brought me a huge bowl for yogurt, which I politely declined.

What a luck to have had nice weather, the last day in Sicily was sunny but rather cold. We started our work on our last day in Biancavilla to cut wooden bars for the fence which only had top railing, I cut vine branches that Kim and Evelien collected yesterday into appropriate length and band them with string for heating. High above the Mt. Etna clouds were moving very fast and seemed to be very windy. Evelien seemed to feel bad, we recommended her to stop working and go to bed.

For lunch, we had grilled chicken and bread, then Carmela asked me if I would like to have baked potato and scrambled egg from yesterday, I had it with pleasure. I look very slim, for them it seems to be a wonder where the food goes inside me. I just work much more physically than usual and I just need energy to keep myself neutral. I just eat what my body needs, I will eat much less when I go back to my usual routine life working at computer whole day.

As we talked about yesterday, we were to go to Mt. Etna in the afternoon. The clouds around the mountain was thicker than in the morning. Sergio drove us to the mountain without Evelien who slept in bed. Along the road we were able to see the lava which came out in 2003. When we arrived at the altitude of 1986m, it was really cold and very windy. We just took a short walk around crater while the chilly wind blew very strongly. It should be surely some minus degrees. In front of us there we saw a ski lift to higher up to the mountain. We were not able to have a fine clear view from the mountain over Catania or other cities, however it was very beautiful. Maybe the mountain is similar to Mt. Aso in Japan, but it is actually almost as high as Mt. Fuji. Sicily people should have a special feeling toward this mountain, as Japanese have a special feeling about natural disasters which frequently occurs in Japan such as typhoons or earthquakes.

We were all the time together wherever we went. After spending time for two weeks together, and not just enjoying our free time on a beach or excursion, but working together, we knew each other which kind of people the others were. It was really pity that Evelien was not able to come together due to her illness for our last activity in Sicily. I took some short videos from the car and at the crater so that she could also “experience” the mountain with us and bought her some postcards of Mt. Etna. Jan seemed to be pale during the drive up to the mountain and also down home. He told me later that he had the same almost 40 years ago when he took a bus. I remembered that an old friend of mine at elementary school who often got sick in a car and was not able to trip together with class mates in a bus. Just sharing time together sometimes has more meaning than what we actually do or see. Jan once seemed to feel better at least at the top and walked around the crater.

Carmela came back home and showed us a huge mushroom almost as same big as her face, saying sorry that she does not have fish. I told her yesterday that I love mushrooms. I have never seen such a big one. I am sure that I will never have a problem for food here in Sicily.

For today's dinner we had some more guests. We had a banquet. We enjoyed the food, wine and talk in the mixture of different languages: Italian, Spanish, English and Dutch. We shared tiramisu and strawberry ice cream cake, exchanged our Facebook accounts. Carmela aske me if I liked the mushroom while I was eating, I without saying any proper word but just “uuuuuummm” drilling my index finger on the cheek, she burst into laughter and showed others what I did. So big and thick mushroom but very juicy. I was sure that Carmela liked to feed me.

There are some reasons to learn a foreign language. For business, for vacation or just for fun. For me it was always the reason to communicate with other people. English might be the common language among people from different countries but it is surely not enough. People would learn my name much quicker if I use their mother tongue. Carmela wants Maria to learn some musical instrument, we talked about music education. She, our guest from Spain talked that the methods are not always important. She talked everything in Spanish and we in Italian, we knew what we were talking about. I added the point that as same as painting, playing musical instrument well needs us to be mentally mature. We can learn technique when we are young, but the matter is the interpretation for expression. Every expression comes from our heart.

Slowly the party was going to finish, women started to do dishes and some left for home or went to bed. The woman from Spain seemed also very tired after playing at schools and she told us that she could not play any more. I teased her that she would be able to play in 10 minutes. It took some time that the others understood what I meant. It was 7 to twelve. Then she fetched her violin from her room and started to play a piece from Bach's partita, only for five of us. It was already the next day. What a night! I will never ever forget the day.

Carmela and Sergio would leave home early in the morning, we greeted at the dinner table. I got a picture book by Sergio about carnival in his home town and a book about eatable plants by Biancavilla tourism information. Carmela was saying good night and forced me to promise her that I should take some good fish next time. I asked her if I should take some from Austria, she again laughed. Next time I would come here, I want to pray with them at meal without reading a piece of paper.

Hidden mosaik

We started our work to reorganize storage area where construction materials were just piled up, sweeping ground, removing soil dune on the flower garden. It was very fine today as yesterday, it should have been more than 18 degrees. Sun shined and no clouds, very comfortable to work outside to work in T-shirt. While I was sweeping ground and also stairs to the working tool storage, I just happened to find that there were mosaik buried at each step. They were not visible at all due to soil. I asked Carmela if she remembered who did each of them. Surprisingly she mentioned for each step so fluently children from which country did such as Belgium, Germany. That could have been long forgotten under the soil, I was happy to find it and continued to sweep the steps. They were very beautiful.

Sergio wanted to buy a saw machine to cut wood, Ton accompanied Sergio to the city to select which one might be suitable for his usage. While I was working at steps, Carmela came out of the house to call us for lunch. I almost forgot time for that.

For the lunch, we had pasta and bread, Carmela warmed horse mackerel from yesterday. I still cannot say pray without written text but it is now much easier to follow how others are speaking. Other Dutch members try to speak Italian much more than they did a week ago. They are European and have more chances to share information in common than I can with them for sure. I can know what St. Nikolaus day is, but I can never fill my memory in my childhood afterwards. This is the limit of the languages I learn which I can never manage. I was allowed to take two horse mackerels. While we were doing dishes, Carmela asked Evelien to feed cats and handed fish heads and rest of pasta we had. They have lots of cats and dogs, it is not so easy to feed only cats: dogs are also very hungry and try to take their foods. It was very fun to see that Evelien tried to let them go away but the dogs were trying to approach from the other side.

I continued to collect pebbles and throw them to where the pavement should be built, others started work with sawing machine to cut wooden piece to nail to wooden fences so no children would be able to go outside of the fence and fall into the vineyards. We worked until it became completely dark.

For dinner we had a guest from Spain, a violinist. She was in Biancavilla to play in schools for the weekend. She only spoke Spanish but we were somehow able to communicate in Italian. For the dinner, small penne with chanpignon which I was watching how Carlimela cooked in the kitchen, baked potatoes, and scrambled eggs. We had also cheese from the Netherlands which one of the Dutch members brought. The pasta was great, I have to try it at home. Already mentioned for many times, al dente is the most important factor to enjoy pasta. Nice Sergio's wine, nice food and talk. What else can we expect at a dinner table? Lots of people may spoil the possibility to enjoy such the intense and rich time by watching silly TV programs or show. I did not have any Internet connection since I came to Sicily, I again found the importance of the real world. To keep in touch with old friends or friends in distance, such the tools are very useful. But I do not want to waste most my time in digital world, it is much more imoprtant to share time and meet them and talk to each other in face. Any way, I got a reason to learn Spanish seriously.
