Cleaning Beach in Santa Monica

It was in September last year, Japanese government officially offered to help Canada or America to clean up beach due to increasing debris from Japan in 2011. I was sure that many Japanese citizens felt happy with this, and the same time just to send money is not necessarily satisfied.

Since I read articles from the USA that tsunami debris from Japan started to reach Canadian or American beach and they were having trouble to clean them up, I wanted to join the local cleaning beach activity.

I contacted some American NGOs or the Japanese embassy in San Fransisco to get information about the cleaning. There were no governmental nor state countermeasure but relies on local volunteer. Especially on the west coast, the beach is the tourists' attraction. To keep their beach clean is their center of concern.

It is not like the city which was damaged by tsunami. Activities will not be held periodically and there was no daily activity. Once a week is actually enough. It continues however for years. I was not able to find the cleaning schedule in detail months before. Or I just had to go there and see if there will be cleaning on weekend.

To make the matter worse, during the time I was looking for NGO and its activities, Sandy hit east coast in the USA, people in charge of the NGOs wrote me back that they were too busy to handle and sent all people to New York, and that they cannot tell me anything certain for the cleaning activity.

I found only one cleaning activity in California, in Santa Monica, for which I was able to plan my trip there in advance. They prepare everything we need, we can just go and clean the beach. This is only two-hour activity in noon on Saturday, January 19, 2013.

My flight on Thursday was canceled due to heavy snow in Vienna, but I was able to fly to Los Angeles next day. I was in a hotel on the Venice beach at almost 22:00.

The next day, I got a fine view from the hotel room. Meeting point was exactly where I was able to see from the hotel, I looked for a hotel where I would not need taxi to get there. I had breakfast at a nearby cafe, then waited for registration before 10:00.

We were asked to subject a signature to accept whole condition of the activity. I was asked by one of a girl at the reception if I am Japanese in Japanese language. She told me then "Arigato gozaimasu". Each of us got a glove and shared a bucket with some people. We started to pick up trashes on the beach.

The Venice beach was clean actually. But there were tiny tiny pieces of plastic, many cigarette filters and pet bottle caps. For an hour to south, then went back to where we started. I worked with a guy from near Los Angeles. He told me that he sometimes join the cleaning on Saturdays. This was the first warm day in the year, I heard. The sky was clear and the sun shone strongly. No way to admit that it was in January. Two hours later, we had gathered trash of half of the bucket.

At 12:00 we all finished our cleaning, got together near the tent and some of us got present from the organization, Heal the Bay, due to the number written on a small piece of paper which we got at the reception. Then I heard that there would be a meet-up later at pier and a small lunch was prepared for volunteers.

I expected a chance to talk to local people and actually wanted to go, but my flight to Oakland was to leave in three hours. It was pity that I was not able to attend it.

Here are the list of organizations which organize cleaning up over there.

Ohtsuchi-cho Akahama, Iwate 2

After coming back to Austria, I got a postal mail from Mr.Y from Aomori. I worked him only for two days together at Akahama site, collected rubbledebris in a same team. For his last day, he told me that he wanted to go to see other site but wanted to join me at Akahama. When he took our pictures with his camera, he asked our postal promising that he would send us pictures. He might have thought that I was joking that I was from Vienna. But after seeing my address on his note, he told me that he had never sent a overseas postcard. I just told him that he could just write as I wrote down and maybe better to add "Europe" in Japanese, so that people in post office can seperate it correctly from ones to Australia.

He asked me of many questions about Europe in the bus. I told him about my parents that first got their passport last year to come to Europe for their first overseas visit, and no reason to miss the best opportunity to visit Europe under current exchange rate. I just wonder how he will react when he FIRST receive a postcard from abroad. According to his letter, he should be now in Tono for his fifth time.

Ishinomaki Miyagi

On my way back, I stopped by at Ishinomaki. I wanted to see the city which Mr.O often mentioned while working in Tono.

Arriving at the station, they were waiting for me. Yes, here is the city Shotaro Ishinomori comes from.

I did not take any picture of destroyed cities or streets when I was in Iwate. I wanted to take ones with smiles instead. I walked through the city and climed up to Hiyoriyama park where I had a whole view of the city along the coast. There is nothing more to say than that the part of the city disappeared. There we can see a huge heap of rubble along the Kitakami river. There were some groups of people with a local guide who explained the situation then.

Fukkou Shokudo

There is a special souvenir in Kamaishi city; Kaiho-zuke. This is a mixture of salmon roe and scallop seasoned by soy sauce. I wanted to have it there, although we can order via Internet. When I was going to work every day, our bus always passed by the shop. Today I was going to go to Hiraizumi but Mr.S drove  me as a volunteer before he goes back to Aomori. First we went to Nakamuraya where they make Kaiho-zuke. It was about 9:30 when we got there, we entered in the building. On the ground floor they were selling fresh fish or dried ones.

The restaurant was on the second floor, we were too early. We faced to each other and considered what to do. Then I got an idea to go to Fukko-Shokudo in Ohzuchi-cho. It was opened on November 11, but when I was working there I did not have any chance to go and eat there. Without own car there was no chance. We drove further.

We saw every day when we went to Kamaishi for work. Stone memorial is standing in Ryoishi district just before reaching the foot of Hakosaki peninsula along the route 45. This is the reminder not to build hauses below there, each stone was added in Meiji, Taisho and Showa era when they had big tsunamis.

We were still thirty minutes early till the opening time of Fukko-shokudo, but we were waiting. Mr.S and I were in Ohminato at Sumpu ranger show and a woman was there, too, who told us that she is working at Fukko-shokudo. She was not working there today. At the entrance I found that CDs and DVDs were on a table. The live CD and DVD was of a band which hold a live in Miyako city where there were the highest wave about 40m. The band members are from Hiroshima and there was also a copy of newspaper article. I bought the DVD.

Next to DVD we saw a picture of a cool T-Shirt with a logo of Ohtsuchi, we asked if we can buy it, too. But it was not ready yet. A man came out of the back of the kitchen and introduced himself. He was the leader of the group which promotes rivive Ohtsuchi district. I told him that I was working in Ohtsuchi for a week. I asked him it would be ok to hand him 5000 yen and send it to my address in Japan when the T-Shirt is available. He nodded and gave me his card.

The restaurant opened. We ordered Ohtsuchi-don, salmon roe, tun fish and sea weed on rice bowl. Only 500 yen. It was wonderful. When we finished the Ohtsuchi-don, the man came up to our table and asked it was good, then asked if we also wanted to try udon noodle. I said yes without consideration. So good it was, too.

It was time to go back. Mr.S kindly drove me to Hanamaki where I would be able to catch train to Hiraizumi. Before we drove there, I asked him to stop by Magoroko Net office in Tono. The man in charge is also Mr.S. and we once talked about translating volunteer workers' activity DVD. I offered him to do in six languages, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Russian. He asked me to do all.

After that we drove to a supermarket nearby, bought 60 cup noodles and 2 dozen of beer for volunteer workers still working. It was still the middle of the day, almost nobody returned from the site. But we left them near the baggage of Mr.O with whom both of us often worked. Later Mr.O sent me a picture of him and our present in his background. We can also support other volunteer workers, this is also volunteer!

Kawasaki Otosan

I started to work in Hakosaki where there used to be an office and a house to clean up the whole area. The owner was Kawasaki san. He had a huge garden with a pond where he kept his carps. Some huge rocks at the garden were moved by tsunami and were 30m away. Nothing else was left but crashed glass, trashes and weeds. I heard that he started to clean all by himself every day. Then Magokoro net decided to help him. Where tsunami destroyed this time, nobody is allowed to build houses. Actually this place would be burred up to 3 or 4 meters to build a new street, I heard. We were to clean the area but we knew that we were doing that only for Kawasaki san so that he can comfortably "leave" his house.

The first day, I just carried stones whole day. The next day I pulled out roots and weeds in the garden. His house was huge, we were working in 10 or more people but it took time to finish. Kawasaki san always waited us when we arrived in the morning with juice for us, then after that something to eat such as pickles, rice balls and so on every day. It was very cold day when he brought us rice balls, he apologized to us that it was not warm and then told that he would cook oden for us when he newly build his house there, smiling.

He losts many people but was always smiling. He told us laughing that only he was safe by escaping alone on the hill on the right, 15 who escaped to the hill on the left were killed by tsunami. He never showed us sad face to us. I decided to work for him in my last week in Iwate.

Usualy we introduced ourselves before starting, but we actually did not at Kawasaki san's place. On my last day, we did. I told him that I came from Vienna and I asked him if he knows where it is. He said no. Then I asked him Austria. Again No. Europe? Yes. I told him that I was from the middle of Europe and was the last day in Iwate. He told me smiling that he could have cooked something much better if he had known it before and said thank you to me. I was really very glad to come to Japan to work for him.

Returned to Hakosaki shrine

As mentioned in previous entry, the step of Hakosaki shrine was destroyed by tsunami and earthquake. The picture was taken from the top. Eight steps coruppted and side stones were out.

When I first show them to Mr.O, who usually works at construction site immediately answered that it is more than volunteer work and we have to ask for professional's help. This is volunteer work and we should not be injured, otherwise whole activities would be frozen in worst case. We actually do not have proper tools. I did not think that he just wanted to stay in safe side but it was from his experience.

I was working in other site, I was cleaning a certain person's house for a several days. Meanwhile Mr.O was asked to do something to it and started to repair it with others. When he was back from work he told me that the stone was much heavier than he imagined, the steps are so narrow and very hard to keep safe posture. The reparation goes very slowly. Yes, I thought that, too. He is not a stonecutter. The great construction worker as he is, he seemed to know how to work efficiently at the second day. But the third day, he asked me and Mr.S due to heavy stones.

We settle the last step, we checked if it is stable by stepping on it and and also the level between other blocks. Then we stuff sea sand between stone block like cement and was almost noon. Actually the real heavy work was from that. We had to bring a side stone block up to the middle of steps which has fallen all down by the tsunami. We were talking about how we would be able to do it safely. I was thinking about it even while we were eating lunch. As mentioned, the block is heavy and is possible just to lift a bit with two people on stable flat area. It is hardly possible to lift it with two people and carry up stairs. But with four people there is no place to stand within steps, to carry the stone block with two in front and two in back is very dangerous because the stair is very steep. Only two people below have to hold whole weight. Our conclusion was to to use a bar and rope so that we can lift the stone on our shoulders to work safely. I carried the stone with Mr.S to the foot of the stairs for about 5 meters. It was heavy but did not seem to be impossible if we go up slowly one step after another. We again confirmed that we have to do it very slowly and safely.

The very moment, a cargo truck came and started to lift up a ship from the sea. A local old obligingkind man who worked together went to the cargo and tried to talk and help? them. We did not understand what he was talking about because of his strong dialect. We faced to each other and wished that he would ask them to help us after finishing their work. We kept watching their work wondering what would happen after that.

The man came back to us with the cargo driver!! We were so sure that the God helped us, watching we were working for the shrine.

Then local people can finally visit the shrine safely, but it is still too steep for elder people!?!?

Kamaishi city Shirahama, Iwate

Over the weekend, we all went to Shirahama district, about 20 minutes further toward the edge of peninsula  from Hakosaki district. I heard that Magokoro Net used to work in June, but the local people told us after a while that we should go to the other region where there were still lots of troubles, because we did to some extent already. This time, after some months we were actually invited to the local festival for two days. And of course we worked too.

There was a small current in the middle of the district but with lots of trashes. To clean up the current was our two days' task. The district is situated on very steep slope. I heard that 40 houses were fully damaged out of 126, there are still more than 20 people lost.

The first day, I was asked to work as a camera man to take pictures of our working. Last week when Mr.T left Tono after long time we hold a party at gymnasium and I took out my camera and took their pictures, the team leader remembered that and asked me in person to take pictures at festival.

While cleaning the current, local women groups were preparing dishes for us. Some of us also help them.

The lunch for the first day was curry rice and ton-jiru. At the site dancers were also preparing.

They told us that we can have as much as we want, and I did eat three times for both curry and soup without and retention. Well, I really ate a lot! Then we enjoyed watching the traditional one.

The next day we continued our work at the current, then Yosakoi Soran dance was shown. Three groups from Ohshu-shi, Aomori and Akita came for the occasion.

Kamaishi city Hakosaki, Iwate

The next region I started to work was Kamaishi. There is also Rikuzen Takata which I heard the worst when tsunami hit, but I heard from many volunteer workers that the situation already stabilized well and there were no so severe work left. I did not want to change the location often but I got to know many people who mainly work for Kamaishi at our dinner (drinking) time every day in gymnasium.

In this region, there is a word "Tsunami Tendenko" since long time which mean that we should escape not in a group but individually. There was oil leeked and it caught up fire, people told that red tsunami came up this time. The Hakosaki tunnel was fully burried by the soil, but the local people by themselves dug and secure the way for transportation just putting the dead of their family members or relatives beside.

My task started by cleaning up Hakosaki shrine; we ought to sweep leaves, collect metals, plastic and any other things. For the region, a fisherman's village, the existance of shrine is quite important. Lots of Japanese without any consideration would tell that they are buddhist but it is actually not so easy especially when we think about more for such the places. This small district, where many people were killed by the tsunami and earchquake may not enter the gate of the shrine because almost all of them had lost their people. So there were nobody who may go to shrine and repair what was broken or even clean up before New Year. Therefore we received such request by the region.

The small shrine where almost all the villige people would visit for Hatsu-Moude in the New Year was damaged severely by the tsunami and earthquake; Stone steps at main entrance were partly destroyed by the following landslide or land subsidence, the path background was fully destroyed and soil completely slided down and solid rock layer was fully exposed. A small truck was able to climb up till the shrine but now even a people would have effort to use the path.

The New Year is very important for Japanese and all of us know the meaning of cleaning shrine. It is not just make the appearance beautiful but much deep inside, so to say mentality. In this shrine, Chuai Tenno is enshrined, grand father of Nintoku Tenno.

We are just volunteer workers and are not professional, but I took the pictures of broken steps to show Mr.O who usually works at construction site if it might be possible to fix by ourselves.

Tono 遠野

On Monday, holiday of Tono Magokoro net, I did not have any plan for the activity. There was no "physical" activity planned on the day and many others had just day off. Mr. O asked me to go out together, he arranged a driver to drive around with us. We were to use the car which belongs to Magokoro net and were not able to use it just for private use. After coming to Tono, we had not yet seen the city at all. So inspecting (sightseeing tour) in Tono for today.

The most famous place in Tono is Kappa-buchi, where an imaginary creature Kappa suppose to appear. Then we enjoyed Hittsumi, a local speciality which consists of dough and chicken soup. This simple dish tastes wonderful.

After lunch, we drove up to the mountain where we could have a whole view of Tono city.

Tono is also famous for Jingiskan-nabe, so to say lamb and mutton barbeque. Quite interesting to know that they used to keep sheep more than 60 years ago and now they use lab or mutton from Australia.

Classic concert

The concert was arranged in the afternoon after the Open House event. I had to set up the concert hall and I said good bye to the couple I had talked to. Four musicians from Tokyo universal philharmonie orchestra visited Tono to play for disaster victims. People living in temporary houses in Tono were invited as same as Open House event. It is surely rare to have a chance to listen to classic music live in a small local city like Tono.

We arranged desks and chairs as planed, I helped to make separator panel on the stage, too. At the back of the hall, they serve snacks or drinks, too. After finishing setting up tables, I stand out of the hall at the door, guiding visitors inside, greeting. Three university students from Kanagawa handed concert program to the visotors. Not very many visitors were there when the concert should be started, but actually arrival of musicians delayed.

The seats were not full when the concert was about to start and I thought of taking a seat somewhere to talk to our guests especially whoever came alone. Then the couple I had been talking at Open House event entered the hall. They recognized me quickly and greeted. So I sat at the table with them and started to talk with them again. The wife likes classic music, as I mentioned already, but she told me that it was her first time to listen to music live. And that her husband was not really interested in classic music but somehow he tried to share the time with her. He told me that he cannot understand, I told him that he does not have to "understand" music but just "enjoy" it whichever he would like and that he just has to relax.

Many titles were arranged to play in the small group. Started from Brahms' Hungarian Dances #5, Hydon's Serenade, Menuett, some Japanese songs too. Band member selected songs which are popular in Japan, or maybe let people think that he had once heard somewhere although he has no idea who composed nor even the title of it. The man next to me seemed to be tense at first but soon he got relaxed and moved his body on the music. After every music his wife wrote some comments on the program sheet.

During the pause, I asked him how the live music was and he told me that he has heard some of them. His wife was really impressed by the live music. She asked me if I have lots of such opportunities in Vienna, I answered of course yes. They asked me if I can play any musical instrument, I told them I used to play in a band when I was in Japan and actually to play in the presence of others is much more fun than to listen to. Therefore we have to swing our body and enjoy the music so that musicians can know that listeners are really enjoying. Then they can play much better. I mentioned that music is not one-way event.

There were some latine music in latter half. The concert master talked about his experience at his first visit in Budapest. He asked the local people where the restaurant with the best violin player was and went there. The music csárdás is Hungarian dance music and he explained us that the player would walk around the visitor's table and play within inches and then go to the next table. His wife showed the face which she never showed him before. And everybody laughed. Then csárdás started.

We sat at the second row, the concert master came up to the woman whom I had been talking and played within 1m distance for a while then left. Slightly after that, she started to sob. I had no idea what happened. Suddenly Miss H who arranged and organized this concert (she was also one of voluteer workers) approached the sobbing woman and touched her shoulder, then sat next to hear with her hand on the woman's back. Next song was tango, La cumparsita. She slowly calmed down and listened to the music again.

The last music was Hungarian Dances #6, then almost nobody was going to stop clapping hands. The band played upon encore "Tsugaru Kaikyo Fuyugeshiki" by Ishikawa Sayuri which should be very popular and touching among the visitors' generation. Then concert master asked us to sing "Furusato (home town)" together. They have their home town and want to live there, but actually they cannot or even not allowed to do so. It is really pity. Some people were singing and weeping.

When I collected enquete sheet of the concert from the couple, I asked the man to give me their postal address. They seemed to be very surprised and I told them so. I only talked with them whole day although there were lots of other invited people to Open House and also to the concert. This is fate and I want to take it seriously. I just told them that they just have to wait for a while. They told me that they were very happy to meet and talk with me and that I gave them some energy to start again and took my hands. I really wish that they can have a nice New Year holiday.

After coming back we talked about the problem or points to improve for organizing that Miss H planned the concert actually for a woman; she likes classic music but has never heard live. However, she hesitated to listen to because it reminds her of her lost CDs and the disaster. Some volunteer workers took our guest today to their haouses by bus and heard that many guests told that they were so happy to be hit by tsunami to listen to such the concert and whole the bus caught up in the laughter. It is of course a black joke but at least they were very glad to be there and we all were relieved by that.

Open House

I was working for preparing for the Open House event in volunteer center where we are staying to how how we were staying here and what we were actually doing especially for disaster victims that are currently live in temporal houses. We set tents and tables for customers for the event.

It is not so easy to talk to people who actually lost their children, relatives or their houses even after 8 months. And I knew that I am not really good at doing this. I pefered to work without saying anything, just showing such people how I work and how the place look like after my work. Here, I am not a hero or something but the people who used to live the place where they belonged to. I really hate to be eroquent in such the place, but just that I came here from Vienna to do some small thing for them.

There were lots of utensiles, dishes sent from somewhere in Japan, we also offered them free for the invited guests. Lots of people were interested in that, I was very busy wrapping what they wanted. After a while, it were time for me to have a break. I happened to be spoken by a man. He supposed to be middle 50 or more. I was to have my lunch at a table we actually prepared for our guest. Actually he was not a taklative man but just wanted to tell me that I was trying to sit where he reserved for his wife.

Slowly we started to talk. Then after a while his wife joined. They were from Kamaishi but they lost their house completely and now living in temopral house in Tono. I talked them about our living, where we sleep, how we live our daily life. I always kept my mind not to tell about myself from me, but when I told them that I come from Vienna, they became so curious about me and started to ask me quite a lot. After asking me of lots of question, they started to tell about themselves.

The man likes to paint as I do, his wife likes classic music. But they lost their passion after losing his paintings and classic CDs. Before I said something for that they continuously asked me of questions such as if I feel lonely living in Europe alone, what I would cook and eat and so on just as my parents would ask me. Actually my parents know quite well that I am doing so because I want it, they will not ask such question to me. I have never complained anything about my life in front of them.

I told them honestly the same. I live in Europe because I have chosen to do so and I am responsible for my decision. I have to feel happy with my decision or I have to look for other way to feel happier. I do not want to blame for others for that. Therefore always try to feel happy and do any effort for that. It seemed tp me that it stroke their feeling. They told me that they felt ashamed to hear that.

He told me about his dream; to make a book out of his works. I told him mine too to make a book out of my works. I told his wife that she can visit me in Vienna to listen to live classic music. I do not know how seriously she took my tale.

Mr O. whom I got to know the day before told me that he really wanted to go to Ohfunato where there is really task from Magoroko net. One guy canceled his joining just before the day, I decided to join the activity. It was just to support the local festival at kindergarden and at a station where a band from Shizuoka would have a show for children.

At first we went to a kindergarden in Ohfunato and we helped them to transport their equipment. Actually there was almost nothing else to do. The kindergarden had just received a digital piano which was donated by a woman in Shizuoka and the band took the piano with them. So we also assembled the piano. Surely piano or organ is necessary in kindergarden to sing with children!

With some troubles we were able to finish the piano. Then we also enjoy magic of other volunteer and sang songs and danced with children. It was of course not the task for Mr.O. He was smoking alone outside.

After the show at the kindergarden we moved to Sakari station for the next show. I have never seen such a concert on a platform! And more, I have never thought of making Watagashi in my life.

Ohtsuchi-cho Akahama, Iwate

We stop our bus in front of ocean research center of Tokyo university every day and here is our local base. The building was also destroyed by tsunami, they cleaned up the building and were already using the third floor for the further research. The first floor we put our tools or equipment such as shovels, hoes, rakes, winnows, nets, plastic bucket or bags and so on. Just next to the building a ship was standing about 60m away from the shore. Huge barrier has been destroyed and we were able to see the sea. It is still not restored.

The first day I join the task to clean up a small channel where we should pick up trees, plastics, metals and glasses from the channel and secure current of the stream. Here is the place where nobody even local people would see, but while we were working some people would stopped by and told us something or even thanked us for our work. The channel is not fixed by concrete. By slightly digging the bank of the channel we were able to find anything; bottles, bowls, cups, gloves, nets, plastic bags, roof panels or utensils.

Every day at noon, we were able to hear the theme song of "Hyokkori Hyotan jima" sent from the regional speaker. This small island is the model of Hisashi Inoue's Hyokkori Hyotan jima island.

I talked with Mr. I from Tokyo and asked my self how heavy might be one block of the barrier out of about 8m high, 2m thick and 10m wide. He promptly answered that weighs 2.3 ton for normal concrete, for ferro‐concrete 2.4 ton per 1 cubic meter. I asked him if he is gene-con man (works for general constructor company), then he told me he used to. Then one block of barrier out of 2m thick, 8m high and 10m wide should be much more than 3000 tons. I was not able to imagine how tsunami can destroy such heavy barrier. Therefore cars or trains in uploaded YouTube video looked like just a toy.

I had been working for the channel for three days then after that cleaned up around the ship. I got to know our team leder Mr.O who had been working in Ishinomaki in Miyagi prefecture before coming to Iwate. He is a quite unique man, very honest and passionated.

Yamada-cho, Iwate

It was Monday and they settled Mondays their holiday since November. Howerver, there was a one-day task in Yamada cho where Magokoro net goes for the first time. When I registered my membership yesterday, I was recommended to join the activitiy.

It took about two hours by bus to Yamada cho from the base in Tono. The chairman of eldery group in Yamada cho asked directly (usually they can ask local social welfare office or publich local volunteer center) Magokoro net to help them make flower gardens along the route 45 on the coast which connects Kamaishi and Hachinohe city. The work starts from pulling out left over roots of street trees (of course trees were washed away), pick up crashed glasses, roof panels and of course pulling of weeds and cleaning pavement along the road. It was about 100m on the both sides of the road.

Before we start to work, we paied one minute's silent tribute to the victims of the disaster. As mentioned that Magokoro net started to take holiday on Mondays since November, it seemed that the situation started to get stable now. But as far as I saw from the bus when we went through Kamaishi city, there were still lots of houses untouched and still lots of hands are necessary to clean these houses. On the walls of these houses I saw painted signs such as crosses or crosses with circle on them. It means that victims were found (cross) and then collected (cross with circle). There were also flags stuck in the ground with red or yellow; red means the house should be completely distroyed (no way to reuse) and yellow means that the house will be used after cleaning inside.

We worked in 8 groups and about 7 people each. There was a team from Kanagawa. The poles of traffic sign were pulled out of the ground by the tsunami, crash barrier or handrail along the streets were bent in odd directions. We raked the ground first to gather crashed glasses, and dug up when we found roots that lost their trunk by tsunami. Then we raked the soil even and pulled up weeds.

At lunch time I bought hoka hoka bento near by and bought nori-bento, Japanese classic for the first time in more than 10 years. It was wonderful! We worked for about 5 hours, gardens and streets looked much more beautiful and were ready to have flowers. Before we left Yamada cho, the chairman thanked us for our work and brought a panel to thank our work put on the street. Not bad to work only to be said "thank you".

Tono Magoroko Net

I started to work on weekends as much as possible after the disaster in Japan on March 11. I knew that I would have to work much to finish my task for this year. Not only to finish my task, I wanted to have my time to do any small things to help local people. My over time work hours once reached 80 hours, but it was really very hard to estimate if I can say the task finished or not; specification would change often, or even no clear specification for features.

In the middle of August I finally got a feeling that I would be able to take my vacation in November and I booked my flight to Japan for one month stay. Then I started to look for organization to join. I also asked my co worker in Tokyo office to apply volunteer insurance at a local social welfare center office. I was really surprised to know that there was still something which we cannot do via Internet in this century.

Where to go was the difficult question. First of all, not every organization will accept private volunteer worker. There were lots of arranged volunteer tour over weekends, for me such program is not suitable to stay there for a month only to work on weekends. I surfed in the Internet to look for information in Fukushima and Miyagi prefecture, I was not able to reach the site which seemed suitable for me. I also checked foreign organization. I thought that my Japanese skill would help them in a team.

Finally I decided to go to Tono Magokoro Net based in Tono city in Iwate prefecture. First of all, I do not have to care for my bed. I could have booked a cheap hotel for the period, but I prefer to stay with other volunteer workers all the time whereever.

The Tono Magokoro Net is a Tono City's disaster relief volunteer network established by mainly Tono citizen in an effort to support the Iwate Prefecture Seaboard disaster area (Otsuchi, Kamaishi, Ofunato and Rikuzen Takata) hit by the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. In co-operation with Tono City Council of Social Welfare, the net is working for the delivery of relief goods and coordination of volunteers as a gateway to the disaster area.

As I planned, I flew to Japan on November 4th, took shinkansen express from Tokyo to Shin-Hanamaki, then local train to Tono. I bought every equipment I would need at a DIY shop near the office in Tono. It would take me much time if I try the same in Vienna. I have only Saturday to look for what I want.

Our bedroom was gymnasium, which actually belongs to Tono city. Women and men area was split by panel and on the floor were tatami mats. About 60 people in male area for the first day. There was temporally built free shower, wash machine, there is a supermarket very near to the gymnasium. It does not look bad at all. To my surprise I was able to receive WIFI in the gym which is used in organizer team office.

Green juice 青汁

The last day in Biancavilla. I brought my green juice powder to breakfast table, Evelien seemed to get cold yesterday, I wanted her to try it. Carmela wanted to try it, too, and then also others. I told Carmila that she can just squeeze and make juice from vegetable and it is very nice for chronicle disease. I somehow expected a typical reaction of Japanese people who would try green juice, everybody drunk normally. It was a surprise to me, however nobody mentioned that it was delicious. It seems that there is a market chance for green juice in Europe. Many European think that Japanese dishes are very healthy and want to adjust their diet. This trend will surely continue for a while. I always said yes to eat more, Sergio first time cheated me when somebody asked me if I would like to have yogurt, and he brought me a huge bowl for yogurt, which I politely declined.

What a luck to have had nice weather, the last day in Sicily was sunny but rather cold. We started our work on our last day in Biancavilla to cut wooden bars for the fence which only had top railing, I cut vine branches that Kim and Evelien collected yesterday into appropriate length and band them with string for heating. High above the Mt. Etna clouds were moving very fast and seemed to be very windy. Evelien seemed to feel bad, we recommended her to stop working and go to bed.

For lunch, we had grilled chicken and bread, then Carmela asked me if I would like to have baked potato and scrambled egg from yesterday, I had it with pleasure. I look very slim, for them it seems to be a wonder where the food goes inside me. I just work much more physically than usual and I just need energy to keep myself neutral. I just eat what my body needs, I will eat much less when I go back to my usual routine life working at computer whole day.

As we talked about yesterday, we were to go to Mt. Etna in the afternoon. The clouds around the mountain was thicker than in the morning. Sergio drove us to the mountain without Evelien who slept in bed. Along the road we were able to see the lava which came out in 2003. When we arrived at the altitude of 1986m, it was really cold and very windy. We just took a short walk around crater while the chilly wind blew very strongly. It should be surely some minus degrees. In front of us there we saw a ski lift to higher up to the mountain. We were not able to have a fine clear view from the mountain over Catania or other cities, however it was very beautiful. Maybe the mountain is similar to Mt. Aso in Japan, but it is actually almost as high as Mt. Fuji. Sicily people should have a special feeling toward this mountain, as Japanese have a special feeling about natural disasters which frequently occurs in Japan such as typhoons or earthquakes.

We were all the time together wherever we went. After spending time for two weeks together, and not just enjoying our free time on a beach or excursion, but working together, we knew each other which kind of people the others were. It was really pity that Evelien was not able to come together due to her illness for our last activity in Sicily. I took some short videos from the car and at the crater so that she could also “experience” the mountain with us and bought her some postcards of Mt. Etna. Jan seemed to be pale during the drive up to the mountain and also down home. He told me later that he had the same almost 40 years ago when he took a bus. I remembered that an old friend of mine at elementary school who often got sick in a car and was not able to trip together with class mates in a bus. Just sharing time together sometimes has more meaning than what we actually do or see. Jan once seemed to feel better at least at the top and walked around the crater.

Carmela came back home and showed us a huge mushroom almost as same big as her face, saying sorry that she does not have fish. I told her yesterday that I love mushrooms. I have never seen such a big one. I am sure that I will never have a problem for food here in Sicily.

For today's dinner we had some more guests. We had a banquet. We enjoyed the food, wine and talk in the mixture of different languages: Italian, Spanish, English and Dutch. We shared tiramisu and strawberry ice cream cake, exchanged our Facebook accounts. Carmela aske me if I liked the mushroom while I was eating, I without saying any proper word but just “uuuuuummm” drilling my index finger on the cheek, she burst into laughter and showed others what I did. So big and thick mushroom but very juicy. I was sure that Carmela liked to feed me.

There are some reasons to learn a foreign language. For business, for vacation or just for fun. For me it was always the reason to communicate with other people. English might be the common language among people from different countries but it is surely not enough. People would learn my name much quicker if I use their mother tongue. Carmela wants Maria to learn some musical instrument, we talked about music education. She, our guest from Spain talked that the methods are not always important. She talked everything in Spanish and we in Italian, we knew what we were talking about. I added the point that as same as painting, playing musical instrument well needs us to be mentally mature. We can learn technique when we are young, but the matter is the interpretation for expression. Every expression comes from our heart.

Slowly the party was going to finish, women started to do dishes and some left for home or went to bed. The woman from Spain seemed also very tired after playing at schools and she told us that she could not play any more. I teased her that she would be able to play in 10 minutes. It took some time that the others understood what I meant. It was 7 to twelve. Then she fetched her violin from her room and started to play a piece from Bach's partita, only for five of us. It was already the next day. What a night! I will never ever forget the day.

Carmela and Sergio would leave home early in the morning, we greeted at the dinner table. I got a picture book by Sergio about carnival in his home town and a book about eatable plants by Biancavilla tourism information. Carmela was saying good night and forced me to promise her that I should take some good fish next time. I asked her if I should take some from Austria, she again laughed. Next time I would come here, I want to pray with them at meal without reading a piece of paper.
