Marathon de Médoc 2013 メドックマラソン 2013

I joined the "longest marathon in the world" in Bordeaux, France.
Runners in costume (this year's dress code was SF) would visit more than 20 chateau along the marathon course to enjoy wine, cheese, oyster and etc.

フランスのボルドーで毎年行われる、「世界で一番長いマラソン」に参加する。ランナーは仮装をして（２０１３年のドレスコードはSF） 20以上のシャトー、ワインの蔵元を周り、ワイン、チーズに牡蠣などを楽しむ。

Opening was really fantastic, three balloons were on our head, ladies in golden suites were making bubbles rotating around the bar.

オープニングは感動的だった。3つの気球が上がられて、金色のスーツを着たお姉さんたちが、手に持ったピストルでシャポン玉を作りながらバーの周りをくるくると回っていた。

I somehow injured my back during sports and I was not able to run for a long distance for training, or actually I did not run at all.

スポーツをしていて腰を痛めていたので、長距離のトレーニングは全然出来なかった。というよりはまったく走れなかった。

At about 19km, my back started to ache terribly. I thought of giving up at the half point where close to the start/goal place. At chateau Pichon-Longueville, after enjoying wine I thought, this might be my last wine.

案の定、19kmあたりで腰がひどく痛み出した。スタート・ゴール地点に近い２０kmの地点でリタイヤかと思っていた。シャトー＝ピション-ロングヴィルでワインを楽しんだ後、これが最後のワインかと思った。

Wonder happened! When I reached 20km point, my back ache fully disappeared and was even able to pace up. My oh my! Magic potion worked!!

奇跡が起こった！２０km地点に辿り着いたときには、腰の痛みがまったく消えていて、ペースアップすらできた。なんてこった！秘薬が効いてきた！！

It was really fun, I drank more than two bottles during run. The goal time limitation was 6h30, but it might have been too short to fully enjoy wine.

本当に面白かった。マラソンの最中にボトル2本以上分くらいのワインを飲んだろう。ゴールタイムは6時間30分に制限されているが、ワインをもっと楽しむには短すぎる。

Drink Pilsner beer in Pilzen ピルツェンでピルスナービールを飲む

On a Friday, I took a vacation and was on the way to Pilzen in Czech, where the Pilsner beer was born. Pilsner means it was born in Pilzen. From Vienna it takes about 4 hours by car.

とある金曜日、休みをとってチェコにあるピルツェンという街に向かう。ピルスナービールが生まれたところだ。ピルスナーはピルツェンのと言う意味。ウィーンからは車で4時間ほど。

Checked in a hotel near the very center of old city square. From the window, I had a fine view of the center. There was a little time to visit brewerly for the guided tour, headed for the city square to have some beer.

街の中心街のホテルにチェックイン、窓からは街の中心街が見える。工場見学まで時間があるので、早速街の中心へ出かけてビールを飲む。

The square is surrounded by very old buildings in every direction, very beautiful. It was rather cold and very little people were outside.

中心街の広場はどの方向も古い建物で囲まれており、とても綺麗。寒くてあまり人が出歩いていなかった。

Took a walk for a while and then entered one of pubs to have beer. Gambrinus, one of my favorites. I thought that it was produced in Prague, but it turned out that it is also produced in Pilzen. It was a great surprise.

しばらくぶらぶらして、一件のパブに入る。ガンブリヌスをオーダーする。好きなビールのひとつ。このビールはプラハで作られているものとばかり思っていたが、ここピルツェンで作られているとあとから知ることになる。驚いた。

From the city square, the brewerly is just in 10 minutes on foot. I was able to recongize the gate, that it is on the trade mark of the brewerly.

街の広場から、ピルスナーウルケルの醸造所まで歩いて10分ほど。門のところで、ウルケルのトレードマークになっているのがこれだと気がついた。

Enering inside, I saw chimneys, old and new buildings. We went to the reception of English guide tour.

中に入ると、敷地の中に煙突、古い建物と新しい建物が混在しているのが見える。さっそく英語のガイドツアーの受付をしているところへ。

For the English guide tour from 16:30, there were about 8 people; from America, India and Japanese. After a brief explanation of the brewerly we got in the tour bus waiting outside.

16：30からのツアーに参加者が8人ほど。アメリカ人、インド人、そして我々日本人。簡単な醸造所の説明を聞いた後、すぐに外に待っていたツアーバスに乗り込む。

At first we went to the building, where there is the biggest elevetor in Czech. The elevator was also the entrance to the factory and for about 50 people. We saw how the beer will be produced in the movie. Molts and yeast were seen there, too. The gold colored Pilsner beer was born by the new method developed in Pilzen, to heat molts and yeast in three times.


まず最初に、チェコで一番大きなエレベーターと言われているものがある建物へ。建物の入り口が既にエレベーターになっていて、50人くらいは入れそう。そこでビールがどうやって作られるかのビデオを鑑賞する。麦芽に酵母などもそこで見られるようになっていた。あの金色のピルスナービールは、この街で、麦芽とイーストを三回に分けて加熱する新しい製法によって生まれたものらしい。

Then, we went to an another building where we saw how the beer will be bottled, canned. It was highly automated and there were just seven people are working in the whole area. It looked quite new.

その後、別のビルへ移動し、ボトル詰め、缶詰めをしている生産ラインへ。自動化されており、全エリアを管理しているのは7人ほどだという説明がある。かなり新しい生産設備だという印象を受けた。

For the final station was the underground. To make Pilsner beer, the stable cold temperature is necessary.  We went down to the underground fridge, where they used to keep snow in the winter and later used it to keep the temperature around 7 degrees. Quite surprising was that they used the facility until 1980 or some.

ツアーの最後は地下へ。ピルスナービールを作るには安定した低温が不可欠。地下の貯蔵庫へ案内される。冬に雪を貯めておいて、春以降はそれを使って雰囲気を7度程度に保っていたとのこと。驚いたのは１９８０年くらいまでその施設を使っていたとのこと。

It was like a huge maze, we just walked around 10% of the hole storage area. At one of the storage, they offered us unpasteurized and unfiltered beer. They said that they still produce a small amount of beer as they used to do long time ago to compare the taste with current highly automated way. It was marvelous!

地下は大きな迷路のようで、その一割くらいをうろうろした。貯蔵庫の一角で参加者に、加熱処理もフィルター処理もしていない、本当の生ビールのサービス。今でも本の少量ではあるが、最新の製法でできたビールとの味を比べるために、昔ながらの製法でビールを作っているらしい。幸せな味がした。

After the tour, we spent relatively lots of time at the souvenir shop at the entrance. We did not inted to kill time there, for sure. It was very kind that there was a big beer restaurant by the souvenior shop, and we were automatically guided to the restaurant after shopping. They know everything what tourists want to do in Pilzen.

ツアー終了後、入り口近くのお土産屋でかなり時間がつぶれた。時間を潰したわけではない。買い物の後は自動的に隣接されているビアレストランへ。観光客の考えは全てお見通しのようである。

I was very happy, anyway.

いやいや、楽しかったです。

Cleaning Beach in Santa Monica サンタモニカで海岸の掃除をする

It was in September last year, Japanese government officially offered to help Canada or America to clean up beach due to increasing debris from Japan in 2011. I was sure that many Japanese citizens felt happy with this, and the same time just to send money is not necessarily satisfied.

去年の9月、日本政府が公式にカナダとアメリカに対して、日本から両国海岸に次第に到着しつつある、２０１１年震災時の瓦礫処理の財政面での協力を申し出た。多くの日本人がこのニュースを聞いて快く思ったに違いないが、ただお金を送るだけでは満足できないというのも正直なところである。

Since I read articles from the USA that tsunami debris from Japan started to reach Canadian or American beach and they were having trouble to clean them up, I wanted to join the local cleaning beach activity.

カナダやアメリカの海岸で日本からの瓦礫が見つかり始め、その処理に困難が生じて来ているという記事を読んで以来、現地の掃除に参加したいと思うようになった。

I contacted some American NGOs or the Japanese embassy in San Fransisco to get information about the cleaning. There were no governmental nor state countermeasure but relies on local volunteer. Especially on the west coast, the beach is the tourists' attraction. To keep their beach clean is their center of concern.

アメリカのいくつかのNGOに直接コンタクトを採り、さらにサンフランシスコの在米大使館にも清掃活動に関する情報を問い合わせた。アメリカ政府、もしくは州政府が主導して行うものはなく、すべて現地のボランティアに頼っている模様。特に西海岸は観光客を引き寄せる目玉になっている。その海岸を綺麗にすることは最大の関心事でもある。

It is not like the city which was damaged by tsunami. Activities will not be held periodically and there was no daily activity. Once a week is actually enough. It continues however for years. I was not able to find the cleaning schedule in detail months before. Or I just had to go there and see if there will be cleaning on weekend.

津波の被害を受けた街のようではない。活動は特に周期的に行われていると言うわけではなく、毎日あるようなものでもない。週一回もすれば十分だが、それが数年は続く。数ヶ月前にその活動計画を入手するのは難しかった。そうでなければ、とにかくそこに行って、週末活動があるか確認するしかない。

To make the matter worse, during the time I was looking for NGO and its activities, Sandy hit east coast in the USA, people in charge of the NGOs wrote me back that they were too busy to handle and sent all people to New York, and that they cannot tell me anything certain for the cleaning activity.

不運なことに、NGOや活動計画を調査している最中に、サンディがアメリカ東海岸を襲った。問い合わせ中のNGOからは、今それどころではない、人も皆ニューヨークに送ったばかりだ。だから清掃活動に関して何も確かなことは言えない。

I found only one cleaning activity in California, in Santa Monica, for which I was able to plan my trip there in advance. They prepare everything we need, we can just go and clean the beach. This is only two-hour activity in noon on Saturday, January 19, 2013.

カリフォルニアでたった一つ、サンタモニカの海岸で清掃活動の予定を見つけた。事前に渡米の準備をするのに十分間に合う。作業で必要になるものはすべて用意してくれるようだ。海岸に行くだけでいい。２０１３年、1月19日、土曜日のお昼2時間の活動。

My flight on Thursday was canceled due to heavy snow in Vienna, but I was able to fly to Los Angeles next day. I was in a hotel on the Venice beach at almost 22:00.

木曜日のフライトは、ウィーンに大量に降った雪のせいでキャンセルになったが、翌日にはロスに飛べた。夜10時にヴェニスビーチのホテルにチェックインする。

The next day, I got a fine view from the hotel room. Meeting point was exactly where I was able to see from the hotel, I looked for a hotel where I would not need taxi to get there. I had breakfast at a nearby cafe, then waited for registration before 10:00.

翌日、ホテルの部屋からは素晴らしい眺めが。集合場所はまさにホテルの部屋から見えるところ。タクシーなど必要ないところをと探したホテルだった。近くのカフェで朝食を食べ、10時前には登録のために列に並ぶ。

We were asked to subject a signature to accept whole condition of the activity. I was asked by one of a girl at the reception if I am Japanese in Japanese language. She told me then "Arigato gozaimasu". Each of us got a glove and shared a bucket with some people. We started to pick up trashes on the beach.

活動に際しての誓約書にサインを求められる。受付にいた女の子の一人に「日本の方ですか」と日本語で聞かれる。そして「ありがとうございます」と。それぞれが手袋を渡され、数人に一つポリバケツ。海岸のゴミ掃除が始まった。

The Venice beach was clean actually. But there were tiny tiny pieces of plastic, many cigarette filters and pet bottle caps. For an hour to south, then went back to where we started. I worked with a guy from near Los Angeles. He told me that he sometimes join the cleaning on Saturdays. This was the first warm day in the year, I heard. The sky was clear and the sun shone strongly. No way to admit that it was in January. Two hours later, we had gathered trash of half of the bucket.

ヴェニスビーチは実際綺麗だった。でも小さなプラスチックのゴミにタバコの吸殻、ペットボトルの二などが落ちていた。１時間南に向かってゴミを拾い、その後の1時間で元のところに戻ってくる。ロス郊外に住む若者と一緒にゴミ拾いをする。土曜日によくゴミ拾いをしにくるらしい。前日までは年始からずっと寒かったようだ。空は青く、日差しはとても強い。とても1月とは思えなかった。2時間後バケツ半分ほどのゴミを集めた。

At 12:00 we all finished our cleaning, got together near the tent and some of us got present from the organization, Heal the Bay, due to the number written on a small piece of paper which we got at the reception. Then I heard that there would be a meet-up later at pier and a small lunch was prepared for volunteers.

12時に清掃活動は終了。皆でテントのところに集まって、登録した時にもらった小さな紙切れに書かれた番号を見ながら、この清掃活動を企画した協会（ヒール＝ザ＝ベイ）からのプレゼントの抽選が始まる。どうもこの後、ボランティアのために、ちょっとしたお昼を兼ねた集まりがあると聞く。

I expected a chance to talk to local people and actually wanted to go, but my flight to Oakland was to leave in three hours. It was pity that I was not able to attend it.

地元の人たちと話す機会を期待していたので参加したかったが、３時間後にオークランド行きの飛行機が出発する。残念だが参加できず。
