Roman holiday ローマの休日

It was the first time to visit Rome. Actually I wanted to visit there for years, especially for the Vatican museum. I love the movie Gradiator and books written about Roman history, but I did not have a special interest in the city.

初めてローマに足を踏み入れる。実際数年来、バチカン美術館に行きたいと思っていた。映画のグラディエーターも好きだし、ローマ史を読むのも好きだが、それだからといって特にローマに思い入れがあるわけではない。

During my stay in Rome, I did not go to Trevi, Spanish stairs. I was not there to see people from all over the world. What I liked the most in the city is water. There are everywhere water in the city running. It was not built for tourists. It was built for the people living in the city many many years ago.

ローマ滞在中、トレビの泉にも、スペイン広場にも行かなかった。わざわざ世界中から来た観光客を見に来たわけじゃない。ローマの街中で一番気に入ったのは水。街の至る所で水が湧き出している。観光客のために作られたものではなく、ずっとずっと昔から、住んでいる人のために作られたものだ。

I went to the nearby snack bar in the evening almost every day. The shop keeper did not pay any attention at first, but after the second day, he smiled and asked me "Do you want a beer?" before I said anything. I just sat near the counter, read my book and watched people coming in and out. Tourists would take a table outside, but neighbors would come inside, sip coffee at the counter standing, talk with the shop keeper and then disappeared. On the wall of the bar, there were old pictures of the building where the bar is in. More than 40 years ago.

夕方には近所のスナックバーに毎日のように顔を出す。店主は最初特に気に留めた様子はなかったが、2日目以降からはにっこり笑って、こちらが言う前に「ビール？」と聞いてくるようになった。カウンターに近いところにすわり、本を読みながら、店に出入りする人を見る。観光客はほぼ間違いなく店の外にあるテーブルに座るが、近所の人たちは中に入ってきて、カウンターのところで立ったままコーヒーをすすり、店主とあれこれ言葉を交わす。そして挨拶して店を出て行く。バーの壁にはそのバーが入っている建物の、40年以上前の写真が飾ってある。

Police officers with their guns at their waist took rest and had a cup of coffee, business people in a fine suits. I saw them more than twice there. There are lots of fancy restaurants in Rome, offering special menu for tourists. But sandwitch bars or snack bars are for the people living there and each of them has her/his place.

おまわりさんが、腰にピストルをつけたまま休憩に来て、コーヒーをすすっていく。綺麗なスーツを着たビジネスマンも。同じ人たちを2度以上そのバーで見た。ローマには素敵なレストランもたくさんある。観光客用のメニューも取り揃えて。でも、サンドイッチバーやスナックバーはここに住んでいる人が、決まった店に顔を出すところにようだ。

Actually the snack bar was the only place I felt really comfortable to stay for hours to see familier faces. They will never ask me "Do you want dessert or coffee?"

実際、そのスナックバーで数時間過ごすのが一番居心地がよかった。見覚えのある顔。デザートは？コーヒーは？と聞かれることもない。

Italian Belgian beer イタリア産ベルギービール

I wanted to see how the market in Rome looks like and went to the Calpo di Fiori. There were lots of shops selling foods and something else, but it was much smaller I imagined. Actually Naschmarkt in Vienna is much bigger and many different types of shops are there. I wanted to take some pictures at the market but I didn't.

ローマの市場を見たくてカンボ・ディ・フィオーリに向かう。たくさんのお店で食材やそのほかのものを扱っているが、期待していたよりも小さかった。実際ウィーンのナッシュマルクトの方が遥かに大きくて、いろんなものが買える。写真も撮ろうと思ってやってきたが、結局一枚も撮らず。

I decided to go home and tried to find something interesting on the way back. There were many narrow streets without people and it was really very beautiful.

家に帰ることにして、帰り道で何か面白いものを探すことにする。人通りのない狭い通りがたくさんあってとても綺麗だ。

After about 5 minutes walk, I passed by a building. I saw many bottles on the wall inside. I thought it might be a wine bar or something. But the shop staff was about to open the shop at noon. I stopped by and looked inside. It was so a beautiful wall with different color of bottles. I asked a woman there at the door if it was already opened, she said yes. I went inside. It was a beer bar. On the side wall there were beers available there, I was able to read  Weizen beer, Bergian beer, Stout beer and even Ale beer. I was not quite sure but I thought they procure these from other European countries for the beer lover in Rome.

5分ほど歩いただろうか、ある建物を通り過ぎた。 中の壁にたくさんのボトルが並んでいるのが見えた。ワインバーか何かだろうと思ったが、店の人が昼間から開店準備をしていた。立ち止まって中を覗いてみる。いろんな色のボトルが棚に置いてあって、とても綺麗だった。入り口のところに居た女性店員にもう開いているのかと聞くと、開いてますとの返事。中に入ってみる。ビールバーだった。横の壁にはビールのメニューが書かれていた。ヴァイツェン、ベルギー、スタウトにエールビールの文字。ローマのビール好きの人たちのために、ヨーロッパのどこかから調達してきてるのかと思った。

As I read the menu, I slowly understood that they were made in Italy. Honestly, I did not hear much about Italian beer till now. Usually Belgian beer, German beer or Czech beer. I did drink really nice Polish beer or Russian beer when I was there, but I would imagine wine first when it comes to Italian drink. I ordered a burger for the lunch and some glasses of beer. It surprised me a lot. Usual Italian beer is thin, maybe due to its climate. But beers I tried there were full and had strong flavor like white wine.

メニューを読みながら、だんだん分かってきた。全部イタリア産のビール。正直、これまでに特にイタリアのビールのことについて話を聞いた事がない。一般的にはベルギービール、ドイツビールにチェコビール。ボーランドやロシアでもおいしいビールを飲んだことがあるが、イタリアといえば真っ先に来るのはワインだ。お昼にバーガーを注文し、ビールをいくつか試してみる。一般的にイタリアのビールは気候のせいか薄いという印象があるが、驚いた。コクがあって、白ワインのような強い芳香がある。

After coming back home, I read in the web site (it seems that the English page is still under construction) in detail. Then I went there three times to try other beers during my stay. There are suprises during travel all the time, but this was also the one.

家でウェブサイト （英語のサイトはまだ工事中のようです）から詳細を読んでみる。滞在中に他のビールを試してみたくて３度通うことになる。旅行にはびっくりがつき物だが、今回のこれもそのうちのひとつだった。

On the last visit, I talked to the shop staff at the casher that there is nothing like that in Vienna and I would like to have this there, too. I bought two bottles to take back. Next time, if I happen to visit Rome again, I am sure to come back here.

最後の日、レジで店の人に、ウィーンにはこんな店はないから、あったらいいなぁと話をする。お土産にボトルを２本。次にローマに来るようなことがあったら、間違いなくまたビールを楽しみに来ると思う。

Czech Beer Festival 2012 チェコビール祭り 2012

I visited Prague again since 2009 for the beer festival. This time, the festival is held at the exhibition center, quite near from the main railway station, just two metro stations. I book a hotel in the end of March where I can get to the exhibition center on foot. It takes about 4 and a half hours to get to Prague from Vienna by train.

2009年にプラハのビール祭りに行って以来、久しぶりにまたビール祭りに参加する。今回お祭りはエキジビジョンセンターで開かれている。プラハの中央駅から地下鉄でたったの2駅。3月の終わりに、会場まで歩いていけるところにホテルを探して予約した。ウィーンからプラハまでは電車で4時間半ほどの電車の旅。

Last time, the festival was held at the huge field by sesna runway. I do not know the reason since when and why the place has been changed. Only one main tent, but much bigger than the one of last time, and a small one can be seen. First I thought the festival became smaller. Arriving around 18:00 in Praue on Friday, the next day of the festival's opening, I walked to the exhibition center by checking the map I prepared in advance. It was just 20 minutes or more walk from the hotel.

前回、お祭りはセスナの発着場の脇にある広大な空き地で開かれていた。いつから、いったいどういう理由で会場が変更になったかは知らないが、今回は前回のものよりも大きなものではあるが、メインのテントが一つと小さいものが一つだけ。最初は規模が縮小したのかなと思った。オープニングの翌日、金曜日の夕方6時ごろにプラハに着き、早速事前に用意してきた地図を見ながら会場まで歩く。ホテルからは徒歩20分ほどだった。

It was Friday evening, lots of people were already there and enjoying talking with frieds over beer.Inside the tent was in three colors; white, blue and read. They are the colors of Czech though, it somehow looks like the French flag.

金曜日の夜ということもあって、もうたくさんの人が居て、 一緒に来た友人達とビールを飲みながら会話を楽しんでいた。テントのなかは赤白青の三色。フランスの国旗のようにも見えるが、チェコの色でもある。

The left and the right side of the central stage, they had different beer menu. I bought 10 Tolars, the coin only valid at the festival hall, for 18 Euros. First of all, I tried festival beer. Every beer is available for 2 Tolars for 1 litter.

大きなテントの中、中央のステージを挟んで左右で違うビールのメニューが用意されていた。会場内でのみ使えるコイン、10トラーを18ユーロで買う。まずは一番上の公認ビールを頂く。どのビールも２トラーで飲める。

In Prague, a half litter beer costs about 35 to 39 corona, is about 1.4Euro, so this beer is a little bit more expensive than normal price, but it is still far below the half of Austrian price. This is not just beer, it is culture!

プラハでは500mlのビールが35から39コルナで飲める。だいたい1.4ユーロ。ここでのビールは一般の価格よりほんの少し高いが、それでもオーストリアの値段の半分よりも更に安い。ただのビールじゃない。文化だ！

Bands were playing, people were having fun.

バンドが演奏し、みんな楽しんでる。

 

On the following day, I went there around 11:00. Around the exhibition center, there is a  huge park and then I found somebody was running. 100km!

翌日11時頃に会場へ。周りには大きな公園があって、走っている人が居る。100km！

Not many people would think of drinking from noon time. I sat near to men playing folk music. He asked me if I am Japanese, then he started to play "Tanabata" with Japanese lyrics! Then I said that I am living in Vienna, then he started to play some Austria music, too. Great job.

みんな昼間からビールを飲もうとは思わないらしい。（当たり前か）フォークを演奏しているおじさんの近くに席を取る。日本人かと聞かれて、そうだというと、日本語で七夕を歌ってくれた。「笹の葉さーらさら。。。」のあれだ。ついでにウィーンに住んでいるんだというと、オーストリアの音楽も演奏してくれた。いい仕事です。

 

 

 

 
I also went to the smaller hall. There were lots of beers including ones by small breweries and offered 500ml for 1 Tolar. I chose the one "Samurai", which turned out to be one of the bitterest beer I had ever had, but with very strong fruity flavor. In this hall, many people were watching ice hocky match projected on the wall.

隣の会場も覗いてみる。小さな醸造所のビールも含めて、たくさんのビールが500mlで1トラーで飲める。早速「Smurai」ビールを飲んでみる。これまでに飲んだビールの中では一番苦味が強いビールだったが、それに負けないほどの強い果実の香りがする。ここではみんな壁に映し出されたアイスホッケーの試合に夢中になっている。

They sold also Czech beers in bottle. Well I wanted to try many of them, but it was time to go back to the main tent to eat something.

ボトルに入ったビールも売られていた。いろいろ試してみたいけれど、またメインの会場に戻って何か食べることにする。

After leaving the "beer hall" with high tension, I found that a group of people were dancing in Rumanian style.

いい気分で会場を後にすると、そとでルーマニアのダンスをしている人たちが居た。

I first worried that the festival became smaller due to the change of event place, but it was really fun and maybe come back soon again.

最初はお祭りの規模が小さくなったかと心配したが、本当に楽しめた。また次の機会まで。

Marathon de Paris パリマラソン

This year, I joined the marathon held in Paris on April 15th. It was very chilly day, under 5 degrees. I had a right decision to take a long sleeve with me for the day.

今年は４月１５日にパリでマラソンをすることにした。当日はとても寒くて５度以下。この日、長袖を着て行ったが大正解だった。

Wearing a T-shirt signed Iwate, some Japanese runners had come up to me and asked me for hand shaking. I kept the pace 10km per hour until 30km, then I got a problem on my foot and had to lower the pace. But I never thought of walking in the T-shirt.

岩手のTシャツを着ていったら、日本人のランナー達がが近寄ってきて握手を求めてきた。３０ｋｍ地点までは時速１０ｋｍのペースを保つが、足の具合がおかしくなってペースを落とす。でも岩手のTシャツを着ている限りは歩くなんてことはできない。

Until the end, streets were always crowded and it was very hard to take water or fruits. I never imagined.

最後の最後まで通りは人で一杯で、水や当分の補給には難儀した。これは予想していなかった。

Time was not good enough as I wished, 04:42:45, but I was very glad to reach the goal without walking. Next marathon..... where will I run?

タイムは期待していたより悪かった。４時間４２分４５秒。でもゴールまで歩かずにたどり着けただけでもましか。次のマラソンは。。。どこで走ろうか。

Berlin 10 years after １０年後のベルリン

It was exactly ten years ago when I first came to Europe; to study German and to find a job in German speaking countries. I did not know anybody in Europe in person, I had six months time to study German and to find a job. It seemed to be reckless but I believed that I would have a chance. It was the year after Carlos Gohn came to Japan from Michelin and became the president of a Japanese automotive company. There used to be a phrase "Keiretsu" suppliers which were only allowed to offer automobile parts to a certain OEM, and they were somehow "protected" by their OEM due to its solid order. Carlos Gohn first changed it and made a rule to procure parts from anywhere in the world if the quality and cost matches. It was a big chance for European automotive suppliers to contact to Japanese OEMs; the European market was already ripe and there was no huge possibility to expand. Acquiring new costumers in Japan should seem very attractive for them, there are many car companies in Japan. Under such the circumstance, I was sure that I was able to find such companies that need Japanese experienced engineer for their new marketing strategy in the market suddenly open to them.

始めてヨーロッパに来たのはちょうど１０年前。ドイツ語圏でドイツ語を学びながら仕事を探すためだった。個人的にヨーロッパに知人がいるわけでもなかった。６ヶ月と決めて、ドイツ語を勉強し、仕事を探した。無謀にも見えるかもしれなかったが、それでもチャンスがあると信じて。その年はちょうどミシュランからカルロス・ゴーン氏が日本の自動車メーカーに社長として来た次の年で、まだ、自動車メーカーには「系列」会社というものが存在した。他の完成車メーカーに部品を納入しないことを約束する代わりに、一定量以上の発注を約束するという取り決めがあった。カルロス・ゴーン氏は日本にやってきて最初にそのルールを変えた。世界最適調達。コストと品質が見合えば世界のどこからでも部品を調達すると言うもの。これはヨーロッパの部品メーカーにとっても、日本の自動車メーカーと取引をする引き金になった。ヨーロッパの市場はすでに熟成していて、それほど大きな市場の伸びは見込めない。それで日本の顧客を新規に開拓するチャンスができたことは魅力的だったに違いない。日本にはたくさんの自動車メーカーがある。そんな状況の下、急遽拓かれた新規の市場のために、日本の自動車会社での経験のある日本人を必要としている会社はあるだろうと、そう確信していた。

My time in Berlin ten years ago was not so relaxed. I knew every day how much money I had in my bank account and surely how good/bad I command German. I just started to learn intensively then. I once tried to find a job without even being able to speak proper German, then I understood that I had to be able to speak German first before I would look for a job. Yes, I really think even now that I studied hard from early in the morning to late at night.

１０年前のベルリン滞在はそれほどゆったりしたものではなかった。銀行口座にいくらあるか、それに毎日、銀行口座にどれくらいの残高があるか、自分がどれくらいドイツ語が話せるか認識していた。最初、ろくにドイツ語も分からないのに仕事を探そうとしたこともあったが、まずドイツ語が話せるようにならないことにはどうしょうもないことをすぐに理解してそれに打ち込むことになる。とにかく早朝から晩までよく勉強したと自分でも思う。

The first thing I wanted to see in Berlin was the Victory column, which I saw in the movie "Wings of Desire" before I came to Europe. I still remember that it was really very cold that day when I first saw the tower. The year 2011, it was extremely warm in compared to the year before, it was around 10 degrees.

ベルリンで最初に見たいと思ったのが、 ヨーロッパに来る前に映画「ベルリン天使の詩」で見た、勝利の塔だった。その日はとんでもなく寒かったことを未だに覚えている。２０１１年は例年にないほど暖かく、１０度ほどだった。

I booked a hotel near Spree channel which flows through Berlin, I did not plan anything to do and just went out and took a walk, or jog along the Spree to the Brandenburg Gate.

ベルリンを流れるシュプレー運河沿いのホテルを予約して、特に何をするという予定を立てるわけでもなく、散歩に出かけたり、シュプレー運河沿いをブランデンブルグ門までジョギングした。

Berlin 10 years ago was still under construction; lots of buildings were still being built there were many vacant areas in the middle of the city. Now I was able to notice the huge difference between now and 10 years ago. I was not able to recognize where I was; A new Berlin center station was built, Potzdamerplatz, Alexanderplatz and even Zoologischergarten looked completely different from as they were 10 years ago.


１０年前のベルリンは工事現場だった。建物の多くは建設中で、街の中心街でも空き地が目立った。今は１０年前との差に驚くばかり。どこに居るのか分からないほどだった。ベルリン中央駅が新しく建てられ、ポツダマープラッツ、アレクサンダープラッツ、それにツォーロッギッシャーガーテンまでもが１０年前とは全く違った姿になっていた。

Now I know that I just tried to concentrate studying German and I did not see many in the city. I did visit many places with my classmates but my mind was not surely there. I did not let me have time to take a walk in Charlettenburg.

今だから分かるが、ドイツ語を勉強することに手が一杯で、街をそれほど見ていなかったのだろう。クラスメートと一緒にいろんなところへ行ったが、気持ちはどこか別のところにあったに違いない。シャーロッテンブルグをゆっくりと散歩するような時間は採らなかった。

I visited many places in Berlin this time, but honestly I felt very relaxed and happy when I jogged along Spree almost every day without thinking anything. It was a very nice holiday for me. Maybe I have to think about my further 10 years in front of me seriously;what I can do and what I should do..

今回ベルリンでいろんなところに行ったが、正直シュプレー運河沿いを、ほぼ毎日何も考えないでジョギングしたのが一番ゆったり出来ていい気分だった。いい休暇になった。今後の１０年のことについてまじめに考える時期になった。何ができて、何をするべきなのか。
