Silesia in Poland ポーランドのシレジア

On the last day, I had some time before departure and decided to vist museum to learn more history about this city. What they guy on the day before told me was, Katowice is in Silesia and this region has different history from the rest of Poland. The museum is just in front of the center square.

最終日、出発前に少し時間があったので、この町の歴史を学ぶために博物館に。前日ポーランド人に聞いたのは、カトヴィツェのあるシレジアという地域は、他のポーランドの町とは違う歴史があるということだった。歴史博物館は中央広場のすぐ脇に。

The Silesian Principality within the kingdom of Poland ravaged after the death of the principal by Mongolian invasion in Poland. They invited many immigrants from the neighbor Holy Roman Empire to rebuilt the Principality. Later it became a part of the kingdom of Bohemia, then went back and forth between Prussia and Habsburg. First after the World War II it finally belonged to Poland. So from the Mongolian invasion in 13th century until the end of the WWII, for about 600 years the region was not Poland. Such environment is hard to imagine from an island like Japan. I felt the city like somewhere in Germany in my first impression, but it was not necessarily wrong.

ポーランド王国の中でシレジア公国としてまとまっていたこの地方、モンゴル人が攻めてきたときに大将が戦士してしまい、廃れてしまう。それで、お隣の神聖ローマ帝国から移民を大量に受け入れた模様。その後はボヘミア王国の一部となり、あとはプロイセンとハプスブルグの間を行ったり来たり。そして第二次世界対戦後にこのシレジアはポーランド領に。13世紀のモンゴル人のポーランド侵攻から第二次世界大戦まで、６００年ほどここはポーランドではなかった。こういう感覚は島国の日本ではなかなか想像がつかない。町の雰囲気がどうもドイツに似ていると思ったのはあながち間違いではなかった。

I still had some time left, I wanted to eat something. I cannot eat anything once I get in the bus to Vienna. I went to the cafe near the main square, a young Polish girl came up to take my order. I ordered today's special lunch and this beer. This beer was really great.

まだ時間があったので、 何か食べることにする。ウィーン行きのバスに乗ってしまったら8時間何も食べられない。広場の近くにあるカフェに入る。若い女の子がオーダーを採りにきたので、スペシャルランチとこのビールを注文する。このビールが本当においしかった。

In the cafe they had German newspaper. I asked her if she can speak German, and then she told me "No. My English is poor, too, I am sorry. I speak Polish, Russian and Ukrainian." She seemed to be Ukrainian. She looked a little bit nervous while speaking in English. I was surprised to meet a European to say I am sorry in such the case.

お店にはドイツ語の新聞も置いてあるので、この彼女にもドイツ語は話せるのか聞いてみたら、「話せません。英語もあまりうまく話せないし、ごめんなさい。ポーランド語、ロシア語、ウクライナ語だけです。」　どうも彼女はウクライナ人のようだ。話すときにも少しナーバスになっていた感じ。正直、こういう状況で「ごめんなさい」というヨーロッパ人に会ったことに驚いた。

Then I spoke to her in Russian, "I am sorry, too, that I am not able to speak Polish". I was glad that her face suddenly brightened.

それならと、その後はロシア語で。「ごめんなさい、僕もポーランド語が話せなくて。」
彼女の顔が突然明るくなったのが嬉しかった。

On my third day in Katowice, I happend to find a nice craft beer bar.
There at the counter as usual, a Polish guy talked to me from my behind. Maybe he is in the middle of 30s.

 "Hey, where are you from? Why are you doing here now?"

 "I came from Vienna to say cheers with you, of course."

He works in an automotive supplier, in the same field as I do, he knew my company. We talked a lot, drank a lot together, he was somehow afraid that his wife would be angry that he would be too late. He let me talk on the phone, that he is still all right. Something clicks with him and it does not happen quite often.

カトヴィツェ３日目。たまたま良さそうな雰囲気のクラフトビールバーを見つける。いつものように一人でカウンターに座ると、背後からポー人が話しかけてきた。30半ばと言ったところか。

 「やぁ、どこから来たの？ここで何しているの？」
 「もちろん、ウィーンから君と乾杯するためさ」

彼は自動車の関連会社で働いているようで、こちらの会社のことをよく知っている様子だった。二人でたくさん話をして、たくさん飲んで、遅くなると嫁が怒るとか何とか言いながら、携帯電話口で、旦那はまだ大丈夫だと話してくれなんて言ってる。初対面の人とこんなに意気投合することは珍しい。

It seemed that even with his wife and a pretty daugther, he more wanted to drink and talk with me. Actually I do not clearly remember when I went back to my hotel, I remember one thing. He said a quite interesting thing to me:

  Here, Silesia is different from any other part of Poland.

The next day, I learned it by professor google.

どうも、嫁さんとかわいい娘と過ごすよりも、僕と飲んで話す方が気に入ったらしい。正直、いつホテルに帰ったのかよく覚えていない。でも一つはっきり覚えていることがある。彼が僕に言ったこと。

  ここシレジアはポーランドの他の場所とは違う。

翌日、そのことについて、グーグル教授に教わった。

Cultural exhange with polish people ポーランド人と交流する

Craft beer trend is currently very strong all over Europe. I checked some bars in advance and tried day after another. In this craft beer bar all female staffs serve beers, the bar was rather decent and calm but with many people. I would like to visit here again.

クラフトビールのトレンドはヨーロッパ中で伝染中。事前にチェックしておいた店を毎日代わりばんこに体験する。この店はスタッフもみんな女性で、お客さんで一杯にも関わらず、上品で落ち着いた感じの店内。是非またお邪魔したいです。

Then I changed the bar and went to the one looked more social. While I was drinking, a young man at the counter next to me talked to me. "Where are you from and what are you going to do here?"

その後、場所を代えて飲み直す。もう少しワイワイできるところに。カウンターで飲んでいると、隣の若いお兄ちゃんが話しかけてきた。「どこから来て、ここに何しに来たの？」

Not like in Vienna, maybe only local people were there at Christmas market. Maybe he was curious that a total stranger would visit his city in this period.

ウィーンとは違い、ここのクリスマスマーケットにはほとんど地元の人しかいません。この時期にどうしてこの町にわざわざやって来たのか、興味が湧いた様子。

Of course, to say cheers with you!

I invited him zubrowka for cheers and I have never seen and tried so many different zubrowka bottles...

彼に乾杯のウォッカをご馳走しましたが、これほどたくさんのズブロッカを見るのも飲むのも初めてでした。

Chasing after Hiroshima Okonomiyaki 広島風お好み焼きを求めて

While I was ckecking beer festival schedule in Europe, I happened to find a city with Hirosiman style okonimiyaki restaurant in Poland.

ヨーロッパのビール祭りのスケジュールをチェックしている時に、偶然ポーランドに広島風のお好み焼きを出すレストランを発見。

Why not? And I was there for a several days. The city is Katiwice, not very far from Kraków, but from Vienna 8 hours by bus and it costs 25 Euro for one way.

行ってみるでしょ？ ということで数日間行ってみた。クラクフからもそれほど遠くはない、カトヴィツェと言う町。ウィーンからはバスで8時間。片道２５ユーロほど。

I did not expect that the bus first went to Bratislava to pick up many people there. Actually from Vienna go through Brunn is much nearer, I thought. But they have their own reason to travel cheaper, maybe.

バスがまずブラチスラバに向かってたくさんの人が乗ってきたのにはびっくりした。実際ウィーンからならチェコのブルノ経由の方が近道だと思った。でも多分この方が安く走れるんだろう。

I left Vienna around 9 o'clock in the morning. It became dark round 16:00 in Poland. Night comes much earlier than in Vienna. The bus arrived at international bus terminal, without watching a map, I somehow reached the train station. Christmas market was there and many people were outside.

ウィーンを朝の9時に出発して、午後4時を過ぎてもう暗くなってきた。ウィーンよりも夜が早い! 国際バスターミナルに到着すると、地図を確認するまでもなく人の流れを見ながら鉄道の駅に。クリスマスマーケットがやっていて、たくさんの人がいた。

I entered a store and ask the address of my hotel, where it is. They told me that I have to follow the nearby street down to the end. I had some image of map in my mind when I booked the hotel. Without a problem I found my hotel and checked in. Around the hotel, it was a bit quieter.

お店でホテルの住所を見せて、どこなのか聞いてみる。隣の道をまっすぐ突き当たりまで行きなさいと教えてくれた。ホテルの予約をしたときに町の地図のイメージは頭の中にあったので、とくに苦労することもなくホテルに到着。ホテルの周辺は少しだけひっそりしていた。

And of course, I want to eat okonomiyaki. They had draft kirin beer, and offered ichiban-shibori. Sitting at the counter, I talked with the people from the restaurant and waited for okonomiyaki. As an ex-Hiroshima citizen I surely wanted to ask many things. They told me that none of them have been to Hiroshima yet.

そして勿論お好み焼き屋へ。キリンのサーバーもあって、一番絞りがいただける。カウンターに座って店の人といろいろと話をしながらお好み焼きができるのを待つ。やはり広島に長年居たものとしては、いろいろ聞きたくなりますよ。皆さん広島には一度も行ったことがない様子。

Amount of cabbage or soy sprout is a bit less than usual one in Hiroshima, okonomiyaki from Poland was surved. It tasted a bit different but it was also nice. After eating I was asked to write a message in Japanese.

キャベツやもやしの量は本家の広島焼きからすれば少ないが、ポーランド風広島お好み焼きの完成。ちょっと味は違うけど、おいしいはおいしい。食後にはお店の人に日本語でメッセージを書いて欲しいと頼まれる。

The atmospahre of the restaurant is as same as in Hiroshima. People will get together and talk, enjoy beer and okonomiyaki.

お店は、みんなで集まってビールを飲んでお好み焼きを楽しむ、広島同様の雰囲気です。

Riga, a city between Europe and Russia リガ ー ヨーロッパとロシアが出会う街

I took a bus from Vilnius to Riga after marathon and stayed there for two nights. The old city center is designated a World Heritage Site. It is commonly said, Baltic states : Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, and people can misunderstand that these three countries are almost the same. But history shows the difference. I did not have an idea of it, but reading the book about the history in the plane made me understand well.

マラソンの後、ヴィルニュスからバスでリガへ。そこで2泊する。旧市街はユネスコの世界遺産に登録されている。リトアニア、ラトビアとエストニアを合わせてバルト三国とよく言われるが、これではこの三つの国が同じようなものだと勘違いしてしまうかもしれない。でも歴史を振り返れば明らかに違いがある。正直そのような知識を持ち合わせていなかったが、来るときの飛行機で読んだ歴史の本でその違いをよく理解できたように思う。

Not many Austrian know well about these countries. People would rarely chose to travel toward North. Estonia is well known by skype, or IT industry or e-government. But other two?

オーストリア人でもバルト三国についてよく知っている人は多くない。旅行先として選ぶ人も少ない。エストアニアはSkype、IT産業や電子政府としてよく知られているが、他の2つの国は？

Before arriving at the bus terminal in Riga, our bus traveled along the wide Daugave river, which told me that the sea is very close. Going up this river, it runs through the northern part of Belarus, and then into Russia: until about 300km west of Moscow. This city grew and was developped as German marchantes settled in, as a trading hub from Baltic sea to Russia. In the old ceter there are lots of old German churches or buildings. I felt as if I were in the old city center of Frankfurt.

リガのバスターミナルに着く前に、バスは幅の広いダウガヴァ川に沿って走り、海が近いことが分かる。この川を遡っていくとベラルーシの北端を通り、そしてモスクワの３００kmほど西まで向かう。この町はその昔ドイツ人商人が移り住んで大きくなったところで、バルト海からロシアへの中継点として発達してく。旧市街の中心部には、ドイツらしい教会や建物が並ぶ。フランクフルトの旧市街に居るかのような錯覚を覚える。

Compared to Vilnius, Riga is more gorgeous and may attract more tourists. Very specious and there are lots of restaurants or cafes around the churches. There is also a district in the city where there are lots embassys and in art nouveau style. It was stunning.

ヴィルニュスに比べ、リガは豪華で観光客をより惹きつけるような魅力がある。広々としており、教会のまわりにもたくさんのレストランやカフェが並ぶ。町の一角には各国大使館が存在する、アールヌーヴォー様式の建物がたくさん並んでいるところがある。これは圧巻だ。

After that, Riga was under Poland, and then Sweden, and then to Russia, until the WWI. Riga was the very important Russian city to deliver European culture, architecture and technology to Russia. The reason that number of Russian is high in the city is followings: during the WWII Soviet conquered Lativia and lots of Latvian was killed or sent to Siberia. In Riga there was infrastructure from the Russian time, then Soviet let many Russian settled in the city.

その後、リガはポーランド、そしてスウェーデン、それからロシアに支配され、第一次世界大戦になる。リガはヨーロッパの文化、建築、技術をロシアに運ぶための大事なロシアの街だった。今リガにたくさんのロシア人がいるのも、第二次世界大戦でソ連が攻め込み、多くのラトビア人が死んだり、シベリア送りになった。リガにはロシア時代のインフラが残っており、少なくなってしまった労働者を補うためにロシア人を移住させたことが原因のようである。

Near the St.Peter's church I found a beer restaurant, I sat outside and enjoyed live music. On the day, a gipsy band played and was great. A waiter asked me, if I am Japanese, so I asked him how to say this or that in Latvian. In Lithanian it is quite easy to say "thank you", it is "aciu" and you would say when you sneeze.
Latvian is completely different. "Liels paldies" Maybe easy to pronounce, we can read each letter as it is. As same as in Lithuania, many Russian visit this city but would never say liels paldies. Waiters/waitress seemed happy to hear that.

聖ペテロ教会の近くにビアレストランを見つけたので、外にすわって生演奏を楽しむ。その日はジブシーバンドが素晴らしい演奏をしてくれた。ウェイターが日本人かと聞くので、逆にラトビア語ではあれやこれはなんていうのと質問攻めにした。リトアニア語ではありがとうは覚えやすい。風を引いたときに言うかもしれない”アチュー”。ラトビア語は全く違う。”リエルス バルディエス”。アルファベットをそのまま読めばいいだけだからそれほど難しくはない。リトアニアでもそうだったが、たくさんロシア人が観光に来るが一言すらもラトビア語を話そうとはしないらしい。ウェイターやウェイトレスはラトビア語のありがとうを聞けてうれしそうだった。

Vilnius marathon 2 ビリニュスマラソン ２

On the day of marathon, it was cloudy and is nice to run. In front of the Cathedral, a huge screen was set. Three chairpeople spoke in Lithuanian, Russian and English in turn to entertain runners. I saw national flags of all runners. Hinomaru was also there, thanks guys!

当日は曇り空。暑くなく走るにはちょうどいい天気。 大聖堂広場には、大きなスクリーンが設置され、3人の司会者がリトアニア語、ロシア語、そして英語でスタートカウントダウンまでをトークを交えて進めていく。会場には参加選手の出身国の旗が並ぶ。日の丸も用意してある。ありがたいことです。

Runners to attend full and half maration will start at the same time on 9 AM. Many runners started warm-up, some just fetch their numbers on the day. I watched people.

フルマラソンと、ハーフマラソンに出場するランナーが同時に9時にスタート。それに向けて体を動かす人、当日ナンバーを採りにきて受付のテントにいる人、僕は人間ワォッチング。

 

After 11km or some, my foot started to ache, and at around 13km I was not able to run at all in the middle of Vingio park. I had to walk. Volunteers came up and asked me, if everything was fine with me. Not fine, but I did not want to give up, at least to the goal of half marathon. I somehow managed to limp to the goal in front of the Cathedral. My first marathon incomplete.

１１kmあたりで足が痛み出し、ヴィンジオ公園内の１３km地点あたりで走れなくなった。歩くしかない。ボランティアの人たちが代わる代わるやってきて、大丈夫かと聞くが、もちろん大丈夫じゃない。でも棄権はしたくなかった。少なくともハーフのゴールまで。何とかゴールの修道院前までびっこを引きながらたどり着く。完走できなかった初めてのマラソンになった。

In the result page of the maration, my time was registered as full marathon. When I got informed of the result from the organization, I sent an e-mail that my run was for half-marathon. But it still remains as a timr of full-marathon.

マラソンの結果のサイトに、自分のタイムがフルマラソンとしてアップされた。主催者から結果の連絡が来たときにメールを書いて、実際には半分しか走っていないことを告げたが、未だにそのままになっている。

Vilnius marathon 1 ビリニュスマラソン １

This year, baseball game was planned until the end of August, I booked the run which I found in September in Vilnius, Lithuania. I have never been there. My flight was via Kiev.

今年は野球の試合が8月末まで予定されていたので、9月のマラソンを探して登録した。リトアニアのビリニュス。リトアニアには行ったことがない。飛行機はキエフ経由。

I had my three-week vacation in August, I started to train for the marathon, but after four days, my ankle started to ache. This was exactly where I had problem before the baseball season started. I visited acupuncture clinic for several months. I also had pain at my lower back. After the season, it came again.

8月に3週間休暇を採って、マラソンのトレーニングを始めたが、4日したら足首に痛みを感じた。ちょうどこの野球のシーズンが始まる前に痛みを感じたところ。数ヶ月鍼灸に通った。腰にも痛みがあった。シーズンが終わってまたぶり返して来たか。

This marathon in Vilnius, we run the course twice. I was not able to train properly, but I wished that I was able to run at least one round.

ビリニュスのこのマラソンは、コースを2周するもの。まともに練習ができなかったが、最低でも1周走りきれたらと考えていた。

The weather was fine on Saturday, when I picked up my number. The start line is in front of cathedral square, Cathedral St. Stanislaus. After receiving a "marathon"-bag with quick-energy food, snack, cerial and of course the number, I visited the National museum of Lithuania behind the Cathedral to learn the history of Lithuania deeper. In advance, I read the book about the history of Baltic states in my airplane. Kindle is really practical.

ナンバーを受け取りに行った前日の土曜日は晴れ。スタートは大聖堂広場前。聖スタニスラウス大聖堂。エネルギー補給食品、スナックやシリアル、そして、もちろんナンバーも入った”マラソン”バッグを受け取ったのち、大聖堂の裏側にあるリトアニア国立博物館を見学して、リトアニアの歴史について深く学ぶことにする。飛行機の中でバルト三国の歴史についての本に目を通していた。キンドルは本当に便利だ。

In the museum, I saw lots of pots, weapons, shields, coins and also videos about minor nationalities in Lituania and its roots, traditional clothes and old houses. There was a bamboo fan presented by Japanese Tenno, a diorama of Grunwald battle field, when the alliance of the Polish kingdom and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania defeated German Teutonic Kights. They were all interesting and also very informative.

博物館ではたくさんの土器、武器や甲冑、硬貨、それからリトアニアの少数民族とそのルーツについてのビデオ、伝統衣装や昔の家の作りなどの展示などがあった。また日本の天皇から送られた竹の団扇、また、ポーランド王国とリトアニア大公国の連合軍が、ドイツ騎士団をグルンヴァルトで破った時のジオラマなどもあり、とても興味深く、また勉強になった。

I also heard that Lithuanian beer is very nice. Of course I tried some. If it once tastes wonderful, or if I can continue to drink without being bored, this may influence the evaluation, but I enjoyed the beer very much.


リトアニアはビールがおいしいとも聞いていた。もちろん試してみる。一度だけ飲んでおいしいビールか、飲んでも飽きの来ないビールか、それでずいぶん評価が分かれるだろうが、とてもおいしくいただいた。

I can never make myself understood in Lithuanian language. I can not guess what words mean with some exceptions, the language is totally different from any other language I know. But it is fun. People in the restaurant will be happy, when I order in Lithuanian, or ask them how I can say in Lithuanian. There were lots of Russian people, but I never heard them say even "thank you" in Lithanian.

リトアニア語は全く歯が立たない。いくつかの例外を除いて、それぞれの単語が何を意味しているのか全く想像がつかない。自分の知っている言語のどれとも違う。でもそれが面白い。レストランの人にリトアニア語で注文したり、何て言うのか聞くとみんな嬉しそうに教えてくれる。たくさんのロシア人が居たが、誰もリトアニア語の”ありがとう”ですら言わない。
