Kamaishi city Hakosaki, Iwate 岩手県釜石市箱崎

The next region I started to work was Kamaishi. There is also Rikuzen Takata which I heard the worst when tsunami hit, but I heard from many volunteer workers that the situation already stabilized well and there were no so severe work left. I did not want to change the location often but I got to know many people who mainly work for Kamaishi at our dinner (drinking) time every day in gymnasium.

次の現場は釜石にする。とくに頻繁に現場を変えたくはなかった。津波の被害が最もひどかったという陸前高田と言う選択肢ももちろんあったが、ほかのボランティアからはすでにヘビーな仕事はなくなりつつあるという話を聞いていたし、毎日の体育館での夕食時（飲み会）に釜石に入っている人たちと知り合いになったこともある。

In this region, there is a word "Tsunami Tendenko" since long time which mean that we should escape not in a group but individually. There was oil leeked and it caught up fire, people told that red tsunami came up this time. The Hakosaki tunnel was fully burried by the soil, but the local people by themselves dug and secure the way for transportation just putting the dead of their family members or relatives beside.

この土地には昔から、「津波てんでんこ」という言葉がある。これは、津波の時には一緒に逃げないでみんなばらばらに、てんでばらばらに逃げなさいという言い伝えだ。今回は重油が漏れたために現地の人たちは赤い津波が来たとおっしゃっていたそうだ。箱崎トンネルは被災時完全に土砂で塞がってしまったが、地元の方々は物資の搬入経路を確保するために、家族や親戚のご遺体を脇に置いて瓦礫撤去作業をしたそうである。

My task started by cleaning up Hakosaki shrine; we ought to sweep leaves, collect metals, plastic and any other things. For the region, a fisherman's village, the existance of shrine is quite important. Lots of Japanese without any consideration would tell that they are buddhist but it is actually not so easy especially when we think about more for such the places. This small district, where many people were killed by the tsunami and earchquake may not enter the gate of the shrine because almost all of them had lost their people. So there were nobody who may go to shrine and repair what was broken or even clean up before New Year. Therefore we received such request by the region.

箱崎での仕事は、箱崎神社の清掃から始まった。枯葉を掃き、金属やプラスチック、他のものを回収すること。この漁師町には神社の存在はとても大切なものだ。日本人の多くがあまり大して考えることなく、自分達は仏教徒とだというが、このような地区を考えればそんな単純なものではない。この小さな地区では、津波や地震でたくさんの人を亡くしたために、地区の誰もが新年までは神社の鳥居をくぐれなく、新年を迎えるに当たっても神社の修理も、さらに掃除すら出来ない。それでわれわれがその依頼を受けることになったらしい。

The small shrine where almost all the villige people would visit for Hatsu-Moude in the New Year was damaged severely by the tsunami and earthquake; Stone steps at main entrance were partly destroyed by the following landslide or land subsidence, the path background was fully destroyed and soil completely slided down and solid rock layer was fully exposed. A small truck was able to climb up till the shrine but now even a people would have effort to use the path.

この小さな神社は、この地区のほとんどの人が初詣にくるところ。津波と地震で大きな被害を受けていた。正面の石段は一部が地すべりと地盤沈下の影響でせり出し、もともと軽トラックがあがれるようになっていた裏道は、地面が滑り落ちて下から岩盤がむき出しに、人が通るだけでも大変な状態になっている。

The New Year is very important for Japanese and all of us know the meaning of cleaning shrine. It is not just make the appearance beautiful but much deep inside, so to say mentality. In this shrine, Chuai Tenno is enshrined, grand father of Nintoku Tenno.

新年は日本人にとって大事なものであり、ボランティアの誰もが神社を清掃するのこと意味を理解している。見かけを綺麗にするという話ではなく、もっと深く心の奥底、精神性の問題だ。この神社には仁徳天皇のおじいさんに当たる仲哀天皇が祭られている。

We are just volunteer workers and are not professional, but I took the pictures of broken steps to show Mr.O who usually works at construction site if it might be possible to fix by ourselves.

われわれはただのボランティアであって土木の専門家ではないが、普段工事現場で働いているOさんに見せて意見を聞いてみようと、壊れた石段付近の写真を何枚か撮ってみる。
