Ohtsuchi-cho Akahama, Iwate 岩手県大槌町赤浜

We stop our bus in front of ocean research center of Tokyo university every day and here is our local base. The building was also destroyed by tsunami, they cleaned up the building and were already using the third floor for the further research. The first floor we put our tools or equipment such as shovels, hoes, rakes, winnows, nets, plastic bucket or bags and so on. Just next to the building a ship was standing about 60m away from the shore. Huge barrier has been destroyed and we were able to see the sea. It is still not restored.

バスは毎日、東京大学の海洋研究所の敷地内に止まる。研究所の建物も津波によって被災したが、三階部分ではすでに復旧されていた。その建物の一階部分には作業のための資材が置かれている。シャベル、鍬、鋤、じょれん、網、バケツに袋など。建物のすぐ脇には、海岸線から６０ｍほどのところまでに打ち上げられた舟が立ったまま。大きな防波堤は破壊され、その間から海が見える。防波堤はまだ元通りになっていない。

The first day I join the task to clean up a small channel where we should pick up trees, plastics, metals and glasses from the channel and secure current of the stream. Here is the place where nobody even local people would see, but while we were working some people would stopped by and told us something or even thanked us for our work. The channel is not fixed by concrete. By slightly digging the bank of the channel we were able to find anything; bottles, bowls, cups, gloves, nets, plastic bags, roof panels or utensils.

作業初日、水路の掃除に参加して、水路部分に落ちている木や、プラスチック、金属、それにガラスを取り除いて水流を確保する作業をする。ここは地元の人でもなかなか立ち寄らないような場所だが、作業をしているとたまに人が立ち寄って声をかけてくれたり、お礼を言われたりする。水路はコンクリで固められているわけではないので、両脇を少し掘るだけでいろんなものが見つかる。瓶、深皿、コップ、手袋、網、ビニール袋、瓦に食器などなど。

Every day at noon, we were able to hear the theme song of "Hyokkori Hyotan jima" sent from the regional speaker. This small island is the model of Hisashi Inoue's Hyokkori Hyotan jima island.

毎日お昼になると、スピーカーからひょっこりひょうたん島のテーマ音楽 が流れてくる。そう、この小さい島が蓬莱島といって、井上ひさしのひょっこりひょうたん島のモデルとなった島なのだ。

I talked with Mr. I from Tokyo and asked my self how heavy might be one block of the barrier out of about 8m high, 2m thick and 10m wide. He promptly answered that weighs 2.3 ton for normal concrete, for ferro‐concrete 2.4 ton per 1 cubic meter. I asked him if he is gene-con man (works for general constructor company), then he told me he used to. Then one block of barrier out of 2m thick, 8m high and 10m wide should be much more than 3000 tons. I was not able to imagine how tsunami can destroy such heavy barrier. Therefore cars or trains in uploaded YouTube video looked like just a toy.

東京から来ているという Ｉ さんと話しながら、あの堤防のブロックはいったい何キロあるんでしょうねとつぶやくと、一立米でコンクリなら２３トン、鉄筋入りなら２４トンという答えがすぐさま返ってきた。ゼネコンにお勤めですかと聞くと、以前はねと言う返事。それなら高さ８ｍ、厚み２ｍ、幅１０ｍ地殻の防波堤の１ブロック辺り３０００トン以上するはず。どう考えても津波がこんな防波堤を壊すなんて考えられない。だからYouTubeにアップロードされたビデオの車や電車の車両がおもちゃのように見えたんだ。

I had been working for the channel for three days then after that cleaned up around the ship. I got to know our team leder Mr.O who had been working in Ishinomaki in Miyagi prefecture before coming to Iwate. He is a quite unique man, very honest and passionated.

水路掃除を３日続けて終わりにしたあと、今度は船の周りをきれいにした。そこでチームの班長になったOさんと知り合いになる。宮城の石巻で３ヶ月ボランティアをした後、ここに来たという。彼はなかなかユニークな人種で、正直で熱血という感じ。
